I just got back from a trip to see my sister in Lansing, which of course necessitates a trip to Elderly.
They had a really huge selection of used this time along with some new ones I've been wanted to try. I've been playing the Washburn canjo for a couple of years, so I have been salivating to get something with a wood rim.
I played the Bishline Cimarron and Deering Maple Sierra. Comparable sounds if you asked me. Certainly the wood sounds different (Walnut versus Maple), but both well made and fun to play. I had planned on buying one of those models, I am an entry level player and those are both solid entry level choices.
The mistake came when I found the Bishline Classic in the corner. Dear lord, what a sweet banjo. Beautifully made and sounds so sweet. Then I also found a used Golden Era. I went back and forth for about half an hour, to my wife's chagrin, and finally settled on the Golden Era as my favorite. This thing was so punchy, but then I could pull back into some nice maple sweetness. In the end, I thought it was just a little more versatile into that pre-war sound, which of course is what it was made to do. I also played a Stelling Golden Cross, a Deering Golden Wreath, Bishline Salty Dog, Deering GDL, Sullivan V35 and a Prucha legend. The Sullivan was like driving a race car, it was so slick, I sounded like a bumbling idiot. Ok, more of a bumbling idiot than I normally do. The Prucha was very nice as well.
So much for settling on entry level pricing.
Good day for test driving banjos.
