To vastly improve the tone and overtones of your banjo (or guitar), sharpen the tips. I use Ernie Ball Pickies finger picks (which already have a far more pointed tip), and used a flat file to thin the underside of the striking surface of the tip of the pick. I also sharpened my thumb pick, and filed it to almost a knife edge. I am amazed at the beautiful tone I am getting as a result, both with my bluegrass banjo and my guitar. You might want to utilize a looser head (giving more overtones, but a darker sound) if the picks seem too bright as a result of filing. I tune my banjo one fret lower than standard pitch, which also gives more overtones. For guitar players, I find that the best pick is a fake tortoiseshell (such as the Clayton .56 mm), and then I sharpen and thin the pick to make my Guild-sized jumbo rosewood/spruce guitar come ALIVE!
