I was very bummed to walk up to the door of my favorite music store, Canyon Music in Durango, CO, and see a sign saying that they were closing their doors and thanking customers for their business over the years. When I first went into CM, they had an amazing banjo selection - 4-5 Stellings, 5 Nechvilles, a couple Gibson's, a Deering Golden Era, Gold Tone's, and some other lower end stuff. They also carried a lot of guitars, mandolins, and fiddles. It was an amazing music store and you had a very wide variety of banjos you could check out. It was also a great place to find out what music was coming up and converse with local pickers. I purchased my first high end banjo there a couple years back, a Nechville Classic DLX. I also got a few lessons at Canyon from fellow hangout member Dan Peha. Over the course of the last year or so, the inventory really started to dwindle. It has been a slow and painful descent. Canyon Music was the only store in the region to carry such a large inventory of professional level banjos. It is terrible to see the bad economy work over a business that is a such a staple of Durango. It will be missed by a lot of pickers in the four corners region.
