Getting things back on track

Thursday, May 03, 2012 @1:59:07 AM

After the near-disaster of the past few weeks things are now getting back on track with a little more productivity.

The rim

The last fortnight has been spent building up the block-rim. The intention is to use 3 layers each consisting of 12 segments simply cut with 15 degree angles at each end so that they piece together neatly to form a circle.

As I'm not joining these with any kind of joint (ie butting each piece together tightly with glue) so to add additional strength I'm offsetting each layer slightly so that joins do not align.

This just gives me one more layer to work through before I can start to shape and true the rim to fit my newly ordered tension hoop.

I am, however, still in 2 minds about the tone ring. The original plan was to round over the top of the rim and make do, and I know I can't afford to buy a tone ring and I don't have the skills or tools to shape my own so I'll be trawling the hangout forums for creative ideas!

The neck

A new set of rasps has sped up progress on the neck no end and the peg head is now shaping up quite nicely, although still a little plain.

I'm trying to add a touch of interest with some additional shaping on the back and I think I'll use some of the spare rosewood from the fingerboard to create a simple inlay for the front.

The fingerboard itself is rough shaped and now secured to the neck - it's all still a little oversize but I thought it better to take time with the sandpaper rather than risk cutting it any closer, especially given my sawing skills to date!
