RK Deco Review

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 @8:36:59 PM

Let me start off by saying that I am not a banjo gearhead constantly tweaking the setup and changing out strings, bridges and adjusting tail piece angles to find " a perfect sound" I am somewhat passive when it comes to these sorts of things. Consequently, I am playing the deco with the factory setup.

Having said that, I like the deco, It is an attractive instrument and I think it plays very well. Best of all ,it is reasonably priced. The action is easy and it is very responsive. Tough passages can be played with minimal effort. All the nuances of tone come through loud and clear. It has a very even, clean, and balanced tone and is moderately loud. The only downside i can think of is the tone isn't as full or deep sounding as on my Gibson rb-250. Oh, and the made in china on the back of the headstock isn't great either.

All in all I think it is a fine banjo and I'm happy with it. I like it better than the gibson from an ease of playability standpoint but that might just be because the gibson needs to be setup properly and I haven't bothered to look into it.

Obviously , the best way to judge its qualities is to listen to it being played. Conveniently for you, I am playing it in several youtube videos. Any comments, questions, criticisms (be nice) regarding the deco or my playing are welcome. Otherwise, maybe our universes will intersect  further down the road in some hitherto unknown thread regarding the minutia of an esoteric banjo topic...................or not.
