For more than a week now I've felt like a kid waiting for Christmas...Last Monday night I tore down the banjo and put most of it in ziplock baggies, and stuffed the rim, ring and hoop in a priority mailer box and shipped it off to Arkansas. I have spent the last six months tweaking and tuning my banjo to get the most out of it. And to mostly a satisfying conclusion. I was so close to being content with the banjo, but I knew the cheap laminate rim was holding it back. The ring is solid and overcame much of the weakness found in the rim. It was, however, so obvious that the poorly made, over finished rim was limiting my banjo. Looking at the back of the banjo revealed warpage in the rim (not due to co-rod adjusting either). Adding to the problem was the holes for the shoes around the rim didn't line up with the notched hoop around the head and therefore many of the hooks weren't running vertically true to the pot.
I searched and tried to get the most for my money and had decided on a maple block rim for the banjo. After being contacted by a member, and speaking with him several times directly over the phone I decided to give my banjo a different rim than originally planned. Euro-Beech rim. I have heard several sound files and a few testimonials and decided to try.
I can hardly wait to get the rim back and assemble the banjo for a trial run. I'll definitely be on here over the next few weeks with video reviews and demo's of the new banjo assembly. Stay tuned....
