Paramount Aristocrat Years
From bob ferrier on 7/31/2012 8:27:28 AM
Does anyone know what year the Aristocrat style came out? It isn't listed in the early 1920's Paramount catalog that can be found online. Also, when did the "hot dog" armrest come out?
Thanks! Bob

Bob, check my other entry under the previous string. Your Aristocrat is a 1928 model. The Aristocrat and Leader models were added circa 1923.
In essence the Aristocrat replaced the Style D. Of all standard catalog models the Style D is rarest. The gold plated Aristocrat and silver plated Style D were at the same price point. Even though the Style D remained in Lang's catalog until 1929 relitivly few were made. After 1923, the Aristocrat was a best seller for Lange as evidenced by the sheer number that survive today.
In 1929 Lange introduced a new model called Aristocrat Special. The Special added a carved heel and peghead back (same pattern as the Style C) and the flange and tone chamber were enameled a cream color. The Airistocrat Special resonator was decorated with a large multi color wood marquetry flower inlayed similar to that used on some Artcraft models and some Super Paramount models as well.

Thanks Michael! Great information. I wish that someone would come out with a Paramount banjo book that covered all of this. Bob

Folks may enjoy looking at this German collectors selection of Paramount banjo pictures.

I don't know how to make the link hot with this editor.
He shows a few standard catalog models but many one-of presentation models.
I've seen one original specially enhanced Paramount Style F that was said by a reputable collector to have been presented by Wm. Lange to Harry Reser in the 1920's. The workmanship on that one surpasses the standard catalog Style F. I think the same could be said for many in this collector's grouping.

How about that, the link is made hot automatically.
Cheers!
