Recommendation for would-be Mountain Banjer makers.
From cbcarlisle on 5/8/2012 12:17:12 PM
It never occurred to me dealing with my original Glenn-Proffitt banjers but, in restoring several other (mostly older, anonymous) instruments, I have the following observation. When fitting the metal ring which stretches the head inside the wooden rims, I strongly suggest leaving a fair space (1/16-1/8") around the ring to allow for shrinkage of the wood. When the wood shrinks - and it will - if it is fitted too tightly, the only place for the stresses to go will be through the wood and out a split! Unless you know the exact moisture content of your wood, be safe - not sorry. (Look at the examples on my blog page.)
