Ear Training Warm-Up Exercise ============================================================================== 5 Chord Qualities Below is a warm up exercise to loosen your fingers and begin your daily practice routine. It consists of 5 chord qualities played consecutively in extended arpeggio form. The five chord qualities for G are: 1.) major seventh (1 3 5 7) G-B-D-F# 2.) dominant seventh (1 3 5 -7) G-B-D-F 3.) minor seventh (1 -3 5 -7) G-Bb-D-F 4.) half-diminished (1 -3 -5 -7) G-Bb-Db-F 5.) diminished seventh (1 -3 -5 6) G-Bb-Db-E Each note of a C major seventh chord is lowered progressively by one note to produce these different kinds of chords all based on a C root. The chord for each arpeggio is played before and after each arpeggio. Always say the name of the chord in your mind as you play the exercise. This trains your ears to the changes and teaches you the notes and the area of the neck each chord type occupies: C major seventh (Cmaj.7) ---9--|--------------10------14-------10--------------------|----9-------- ---8--|-----------12----------------------12----------------|----8-------- ---9--|-----9--12-----------------------------12---9--------|----9-------- --10--|-10--------------------------------------------10----|---10-------- ------|------------------12-------12------------------------|------------- C dominant seventh (C7) ---8--|-----------------10--------14------10----------------|----8-------- ---8--|-------------11-----------------------11-------------|----8-------- ---9--|------9--12------------------------------12--9-------|----9-------- --10--|--10--------------------------------------------10---|---10-------- ------|-----------------------12------12--------------------|------------- C minor seventh (Cm7) ---8--|-----------------10---------13------10---------------|----8-------- ---8--|-------------11------------------------11------------|----8-------- ---8--|------8--12-------------------------------12--8------|----8-------- --10--|--10---------------------------------------------10--|---10-------- ------|-----------------------12-------12-------------------|------------- C half-diminished (Cm7-5) ---8--|-----------------10---------13-------10--------------|----8-------- ---7--|-------------11-------------------------11-----------|----7-------- ---8--|------8--11--------------------------------11--8-----|----8-------- --10--|--10---------------------------------------------10--|---10-------- ------|-----------------------11-------11-------------------|------------- C diminished seventh (C°7) ---7--|-----------------10---------13-------10--------------|-----7------- ---7--|------------10--------------------------10-----------|-----7------- ---8--|-----8---11--------------------------------11---8----|-----8------- --10--|--10----------------------------------------------10-|----10------- ------|-----------------------11-------11-------------------|------------- After completing the above five lines, start the same cycle again on B major 7 using the same fingering used for C maj.7 and then play the remaining 4 chord qualities B7, Bm7, Bm7-5, Bdim7, again. B major seventh (Bmaj. 7) ---8--|-------------------9-------13---------9-------------|-----8------- ---7--|--------------11------------------------11----------|-----7------- ---8--|------8---11-------------------------------11---8---|-----8------- ---9--|---9----------------------------------------------9-|-----9------- ------|-----------------------11-------11------------------|------------- .....Then descend to B dominant seventh (B7) etc. Repeat this cycle descending to Bb, A, Ab etc. until you get to G. Note that a C diminished chord is formed by lowering by one fret every note except C (root) of a C dominant 7 chord.
