I'm with ya CndPicker, a little late. I grew up in Ottawa, took lessons from Garry Greenland as a kid. Bin livin' in BC, Alberta and have since returned to the home province but now reside in Sudbury....good fishin'. I play Scruggs style, and if it's the 1000th time i've heard JD pick the same tune, It'll still blow me away! Currently the band Hard Ryde is puttin' up with me as their banjo picker, I'm very glad to be there. Cheers and Hello to all!. D'Arcy

I'm not Canadian, although Maine shares three times as much boundary with Canada as we do with the US. I suggested this sometime ago, but it falls on deaf ears. It would be nice if Canadians were organized by province on the HO, like we "Gringos" are organized by states. For example, I'm heading to PEI in two weeks for the Potato Equipment Show in Charlottetown. To search members living in PEI, I have to go thru the entire list of Canadian members to find any that might live on that part of the the island. I know its not a big deal, but it would be make a search much easier.
Cheers, John Scarborough, Maine

Howdy,
Gabe from Calgary. I went to Barry Luft last year and told him that I wanted to learn Scrugg's style. Barry set me straight in no time, and now I'm very happily frailin' instead. Learned on a Martin Sigma (at least 30 yrs old) and am now trying out my sweet new Vega Senator. I'm just a novice, but would like to hear from other folks who want to jam in Calgary (or close by).

Hey folks!
Glad to see so many other maple-syrup suckers on the site.
I live just a stone's throw from Parliament Hill - but it's not my fault.
As far as the banjo goes I'm an enthusiastic newbie.

I'm late finding this post but better late than never! I'm from Port Alberni, but I'm moving to Qualicum soon. Its close to Coombs, which has had a Bluegrass Festival for 31 or 32 years now. My interest with 3 fingerstyle scruggs pickin developed when we first moved to that area, 30 years ago. We used to go to the Coombs Country Opera, which was a bluegrass coffee house. The show was always good, and it was enough to get me to pick up the banjo and take it on, My major influences have been J. D. Crowe, Sonny Osborne,Chris Stevens, Nick Hornbuckle, Glen Ribena, Gerry Patch to name a few

Ramblin Man, As far as the West Coast for lots of banjos, I don't know of any, that stock lots. Where I get my stuff is Old Town Strings in Victoria. They do excellent repairs & have the odd used banjo, as they come & go. I spoke with the owner Dave, & he said he was getting in a used Deering shortly. This was just last week so you may want to check there. In Vancouver, there is San Francisco Pawnbrokers & they have sometimes quite a lot of banjos, but you have to know what you're looking for. I just purchased a Vega banjo from Elderly Instruments in Michigan. I dealt with them years ago & their service was excellent & they have lots of used & new banjos too!

Hello from Saskatoon.
I learned Scruggs-style and clawhammer from Roger Stone at the Halifax Folklore Centre, back in my 'care-freer' days on the east coast. Greetings to everyone, coast to coast, south of 49 to north of 60 and beyond!

Wynyard Saskatchewan here. My Uncle used to play banjo when I was young I had always kind of liked it but never payed much attention. He had always wanted me to learn an instrument but I never bothered. He left me his 5 string when he passed away so I figured I would give it a shot and have been hooked ever since I picked it up.
I don't know much about it all I know is its a HOB custom made at House Of Banjo in Edmonton.

We once got emigration visas for Canada (but then we thought we'd stay here in SA when our goverment became respectable back in '94) and my step-daughter has a Canadian passport.
Can I be a pen-picker?
Damn! No time for vibrato...

One house in the middle, the other in the mountains on highway 16/BC, 222km apart. Retired quick enough to leave lots of work and worry for all the young punks. Restarted 3-finger on a Sierra nearly a year ago. Another 5-10 years and I'll consider myself a beginner.
