Guess I'm late to the party...
I was a punk guy in my youth... Ramones, Clash, a little Black Flag, some Minor Threat, The Sex Pistols, etc. Now I play clawhammer and I think it's part of a natural progression. As you age, you lose some of that loud youthful rage and teenage angst, but you still want to play something raw and real and unpolished. Old time is perfect for that I think.
Anyone heard of the .357 String Band? They fit into what we're talking about.
If you haven't already, check out the Avett Brothers. Their live shows blow me away, and their live album pretty much nails it.

Oh, and anyone who says punk is dead should check out J Marinelli.
He's a one-man-all-DIY-all-the-time-band originally from Morgantown, now in Louisville. A nice guy to boot and occationally picks up a banjo for acoustic tunes. Great writing.

My band's been playing shows since February. We are a 5 piece acoustic punk band. We have a doghouse bassman, Washboard/stompbox/varied percussionist, guitar, banjo (Me) and accordion. Sometimes, we have a friend who plays a bass drum and drinks a beer the whole time. Yes, he plays drum, and Miller High life. Our web page is here: http://www.myspace.com/themiseryjackals we are playing in Cleveland at the Beachland on June 20. And if any of you HO members do want to come to the show, if you are interested in hearing my Hatfield custom with the Sullivan Old factory floor rim and Dannick tonering, let me know and I'll bring the "Mantistone". I usually play a Deering Maple blossom when I play clubs.
Punk bluegrass full steam ahead!
Oh yeah! We played with a great band from San Fransisco last week. Their banjoist "Possum" is a mighty fine picker and an awful nice feller! They're called the Pine Box Boys. Check them out folks! They're great!

Bill, your band is ace, love the idea of punking up an accordion and jews harp on a tune about youthful masculinity. Rock 'n' Roll indeed.
Proud Union Man

Frank! Thanks man! I don't get on the hangout much, so I'm just seeing this now. It's a great site, and I periodically come to check this thread. The hanging Ropes sound great. Maybe we can play with yall when we come across the pond in a few years? Speaking of tours, my band is doing a short tour in the Spring. We will be hitting places from Ohio to Alabama. ______________________________

He is awesome, I just stumbled across him in the past month or so. A Great talent. Also, there is a new festival that's trying to take hold. It's called the Deep Blues Festival, and it features underground country/blues/punk type bands. It is held in Minneapolis in July. Next year will be the 3rd year. It needs support. Being underground usually means not many folks know about you, it also means you probably play some of the best, from the heart music around. Do check it out. ______________________________

In case anyone is interested, my band is touring down South the first week in April. We'll be in Nashville, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Austin, New Orleans and a number of Ohio spots. See our page for more details. If you ask us to play the kkk took my baby away, we'll probably do it. http://www.myspace.com/themiseryjackals

Cool! Looks like you're not coming anywhere near my area in CA. Oh, well. Good luck, and let us know how it goes. Hopefully you won't get any "That ain't punk" or visa-versa "That ain't bluegrass" from any hard-heads.
Glad to see this thread is still kickin'.

Punk and speed metal were my pre-requisites for the five string! I grew up on the edge of NYC and spent my days seeing everything from punk acts like Fugazi to death metal bands like Morbid Angel. I still listen to it all. I actually got my head broken open in a pit at Roseland ballroom at a Fugazi show by some skins who were just a bit too excited! Ian Makaye saw what happened and got all mad about it! That's a long story and I'm not sure if the details would be appreciated by the Hangout moderators! Anyway these days my bluegrass band does some Misfits tunes like Some Kinda Hate and I'm trying to figure out a project that will do all Slayer covers with bluegrass instruments! (sorry Big Mon!)
And lets not forget.....H A N K 3!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Jack. We're playing with a lot of great bands too. It's going to be a great little tour. If we run into any purists, we readily admit we don't know what you'd call it, and thank you fer narrowing it down fer us!
Skinheads did like to cause unfriendly ruckus back then. I nearly got smeared at a Warzone show. I don't see it these days, but maybe it's just because of the area I'm in.
