Mike B you need to do a Kinghorse reunion.

hope you guys don't mind me chimin' in. Every time a read this thread it brings back serious memories, all the talk about violence in the pits. I was at a Deglo Abortions show at Carlton U, in Ottawa, some dude, right messed up was slammin' in the pit with razor blades between his fingers, actually getting some people. The cops came in and broke that one up fast. Another time the BFG's were playing (used my buddies drum set and demoed all of his heads), next thing you know all the Skins are there...so what song do they play....S......... is 'cause your so stupid..K.........like the kkk, I...........cause your an idiot...etc..etc..Man did that turn into a brawl with lots of Paddy wagons leavin'! I'll be at the IBMA's wearing my rat bones jacket, minor threat down one arm...cro-mags patch on the back..and vision street wear patches down the other arm...LOL..

JackJack - Posted - 09/20/2007:  18:04:59

Another violent pit story, but this one has a good ending. DKB might remember this one.

It must have been 1986 in Denver CO, DOA was tearing-it-up on stage (forgot which venue), I was right up front within spitting distance of the singer guitarist Joey "S#*!head" Keithley. Back behind me in the pit, the worst of the violent Denver skin heads -Dan Ashley, was doing his usual "slam the smallest guy to the floor as hard as you can, then kick 'em" dance.

Joey saw what was happening and stopped right in the middle of a song. Then he turned his guitar around and held it by the neck like a baseball bat, and yelled into the mic, "Hey you! Yeah you, you big #@%&! Come up here and pick on someone your own size you &^% &^# @#$%**!

So all at once, all these people in the pit started to push Dan up to the stage! I remember the look on his face as Joey reached down to try to grab him --total terror! Dan started (in an almost wimper) saying "It wasn't me, I didn't do nothing". Everyone was yelling to Joey to "Hit him!, "Hit that $%@#$!" "Knock his $#@ out!" Dan somehow got away from the people pushing and pulling him up to the stage. DOA broke into "(We don't care what you say) F*** You!". I guess Dan decided he wasn't welcome anymore and left the venue for the rest of the night.

That was a great show!

The Ladies choice lounge. I think Joey grabbed the toilet seat guitar. That was an awesome night. I still see the piece of work that is Dan ashley every few years.

"Dangit..." thought you were going to bring up Dagnasty when I first looked. I don't think anyone has brought them up, I followed lots of music that Dave Smalley was involved in, Down by Law, Descendents etc. He had some cool tunes.
I just went home to the old mans place and recovered my old Vinyl.....Dagnasty (Wig out at Denkos, What Can I Say), Asexuals (be what you want), all three Minor Threat albums (Blue, Out of Step and Salad Days 7"), Cro-Mags (Age of Quarrel), State of the Union (DC comp), first two Fugazi's ....and more...Now I just have to set up the turn table....

Hey Mike, I met you a couple years ago at the IBMA's (two Canadian fellas enjoying some bevies), hopefully run into you again..Talk Punk and Grass.

Just wanted to bump this thread back up to the top with another violent pit story turned good (or interesting). DKB may remember this one too ("Ladies Choice Lounge", thanks DKB, that was a cool venue.).

From my best recollection:

Black Flag 1985? at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver. Slip It In Tour (or was it My War?). Black Flag were tearing it up on stage, and all the Denver skinheads where doing their usual "kick 'em when they're down" dance in the pit. One of them handed a business card up to Henry during a song. As soon as Henry read it, he jumped off the stage and chased the skinhead down into the seating area like he was going to kick the #$%@ outta him, all while the Greg and the rest of the band slowly stopped playing and everybody was "what the heck is going on?"

After the scuffle, Henry got back on stage and started laying into the skinheads that the nazi or KKK business card that was handed to him was the wrong thing to hand to him, and if they wanted to kick anybodies ass then they should come up on stage and take him on. For the longest time, he wouldn't stop trying to get them up there to fight and was preaching about facism, etc.. for at least 10 minutes. Nobody went up on stage to fight him (but a bunch of cuss word were exchanged) and Greg looked like "Shut up dude, let's just play". Finally they started into their set again.

I still have that ticket stub.

Anybody seen the movie Coffee and Cigarettes?

Remember this scene with Iggy Pop and Tom Waits. I don't know why I find it so funny.

Jack, I caught the last 2 flag tours so I think I missed it. The first time I saw them was with the minutemen and the next time with painted willie and Gone. Those 2 shows still stick in my mind as the greatest live shows I have ever seen. The music of flag kept me alive during my teen years. I know I keep saying this Jack but I will get a hold of Jerome and get you some A P on DVD and send it your way.

Ah! I saw that same tour-- Flag, Painted Willie and Gone. It was the last time I saw Black Flag-- I had seen them in '84 and '85 too-- "My War" and "Slip it In" tours.

I really love Painted Willie. They were a blast.

Speaking of all these old SST bands, I saw Meat Puppets twice in the early-mid 80s. Once they were as tight as you could believe, the other time they were as drunken and sloppy as you could imagine. I'm still trying to decide which show was better.

This thread is dope! I didn't really expect to find something like this here. I've always wanted to start a fast punk/bluegrass sorta thing but I can't find anyone to play with. I working out Back To The Motor League (by Propagandhi) on the banjo. I also learned F*** Religion (propagandhi) and got banned from the local jazz bar for performing it all wasted one night. Felt like a real idiot the next day haha

Do we have any Motohead fans out there? I played for a local Cincy band and we opend up for them. Lemmy is the coolest.

Nothing tabbed out, but I do loves me some Motorhead. Lemm is cool as can be.

Back when I was 15-16 and all my friends were into what was "cool and not cool" in the punk rock world, the only 3 metal bands considered worthy were Sabbath, Slayer and Motorhead.

This was in the Austin Chron yesterday. Bummer....Used to see these guys at Raul back in the day.

"Mikey Donaldson, 45, bassist for the Offenders, who reunited for a one-off gig at Emo's in March 2002, died in his sleep on Sept. 22 in Barcelona, where he had relocated from Amsterdam. A central figure of the Raul's punk scene of the early Eighties, Donaldson moved to San Francisco in 1986 with the Dicks' Gary Floyd, forming Sister Double Happiness, and also performed with MDC and DRI. Arrangements for the funeral, to take place at the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in his native Killeen, and an Austin memorial service are still pending."

RIP, Mikey!

I loved The Offenders. Their "I Hate Myself" / "Bad Times" 7" saw a TON of play on my turntable back in the day. I used to see them in Austin and in Tulsa. There was a Tulsa band called N.O.T.A. and when they played Austin, Offenders would open for them and when Offenders played Tulsa, N.O.T.A. would open for them.

That's a pity. So young.

too bad about Mikey from the Offenders. I used to talk with those guys when I ordered the We must Rebel LP. Only saw them once and they kicked butt. Bow-tie 75, you should've gone to IBMA this year. Lots of great music. Expensive but what can ya do. It's Nashville and I did really enjoy myself. I guess I'm getting used to it being there and I think a lot of others are too. Hung out a couple times with Tommy Ramone. Pretty nice guy. Have you all seen the current ish of SPIN? Great pics and articles of the old punk guard from the UK, New York, to LA. Old pics and current pics.
If any of you were at IBMA, did ya catch Murrell's band at the FQMS/Gibson after hours showcase? Whaddaya think?! THought they did a darn good job. We're real proud of our Murrell Scruggs! We met the Honorable Mr Cliff Fitch. Good seeing ya Cliff! Bob Hunter came aroudn too. It was good to see Mr Hunter too and many others. I'll post some pics soon somewhere. I'll let you know where.
BTW,
Thanks again to everyone for the support and prayers at the loss of Bill Sullivan. It means so much to the Sullivan Family and all of us at First Quality.

Came to check on the thread again. Great to see it still going. The guy from North Side Kings is the singer, Danny, who knocked out Danzing. Danzig deserved it. Speaking of the North Side kings, those guys are awesome, listen to their stuff on myspace. They rarely leave Arizona though.

In other news, my band is almost complete. We're going to cover a D.R.I. tune, "Nursing Home Blues" it's going to be awesome. Hopefully, if everything goes right, we'll start playing out next year.

Mike, click for some clips of AH on youtube. I like that if you replace the words hardcore and punk with bluegrass and old time while your watching the movie they fit almost perfectly within the context of the message. Note that near the end Brian Baker is sitting in front of a Hank Williams poster \m/

I'm new here at the Hangout, my banjo teacher said it was a good place. :D

I'm just beginning to learn to play the banjo, but I love punk music and that's what I like to play. I'm trying to learn Cripple Creek but I keep getting distracted by punk songs and trying to play those instead. XD I'm so bad that they're completely unrecognizable, but it's still fun.

I like all the usual suspects like Dead Kennedys and the Misfits and all that. I love the band Defiance Ohio. They're punk and some of their songs have banjo parts. And you can listen to thier CDs for free online. It's awesome. :D

It reminded me of seeing flipper when I was 15 and being scared out of my mind nd the bad brains on the I against I tour. At the time I had no idea of the impact of what I was a part of had on who I am today. A great reminder of where I came from. Awesome!

it definitely brought back a lot of memories-the shows, the records. HR seemed so mellow for a guy who was the most intense singer I have ever seen. it is neat to have been a part of that music scene, especially at the age I was. I found a VHS copy of some New Wave THeatre shows that I think used to air on TBS after Night flight. FEAR did their Christmas song-one of the 2 highlights of watching it. The other was the Blasters performance. Other than that the music wasn't as memorable as what was in American Hardcore.
They have been doing a show on the local public radio station about the early Louisville punk bands which is pretty cool.Couldn't make it to their shows. I was only 11 or 12! Bands like the Endtables and Babylon Dance Band. Check it out:

I just watched a Fugazi movie called "Instrument". I'm not a huge Fugazi fan but I had their first several albums (and actually saw them! DKB - Atzlan Theater, 90?). I think they are brilliant... and then just awful. The movies takes place over a span of their second and third album (I believe) with footage of live shows and raw interviews. When they're on, they sound really good. They definitely are committed to their direction of how they don't want to go near corporate music. I wonder how they are doing? Are they still around playing and producing with Dischord Records?

On another subject....does anybody relate to this song, Tommy Womack "Alpha Male and the Canine Mystery Blood"?
