This is a great thread. Can anyone recommend some specific punk bands/albums that incorporate the 5-string? After reading through the posts I have on my schedule to listen to: Dropkick Murphy's, The Bad Livers, Split Lip Rayfield .

Ahh Shane!!! The man is a genius even if he is soggy and whiskey-logged. If I had just a little teeny-tinny bit of half of his talent I'd be going places. It's not what you're asking for but since I reckon you like the Pogues a bit the tab for Boys From The County Hell is on Folk Punk Tabs. I've not tried it but if you ever get around to it, let me know how it sounds.
DKB - Posted - 05/22/2007: 18:55:58
Easye, You should check out 16 horsepower and wovenhand. The are 2 different bands but with the same guy (David Eugene Edwards). 16 horsepower has more banjo pickin kind of a scruggs clawhammer hybrid. these 2 bands really show that heaviness is more than sound it is a state of mind. They are from up here so I have seen them a few times and have been moved to tears just feeling the music. If you send me your addy at my email I can burn you some stuff if you want to check it out. Jay it is great to see you back. Be Blessed

DKB thanks, I'm able to squeeze a few minutes in here and there for myself, plus you know... the continuity of the Punk/Bluegrass thread was at stake.

hey DKB,
thanks for the heads-up on phillip roebuck - great stuff.
oh, and by the way, the punk-meets-bluegrass thread ain't dead - it just smells that way.
SlowPockets - Posted - 05/22/2007: 19:23:30
Oh crap! Nice he's got the one-man band thing going on. Cool version of Soldiers Joy on Phillip's page, Ball Turret Blues is pretty good too. Thanks for the heads up. Dan are you going to IBMA?
Speaking of Steve Albini there's another genius, I'm going to pull out some Rapeman tonight, I haven't listened to that cd in a long time. *Friend of a friend story alert* A guy that I used to work with had some friends that recorded with Steve Albini, apparently they just got his number and called him up. They all flew up to Chicago and sat down with him and worked out a few songs. I was pretty blown away when he told me that, then he said "Yeah Steve will do that for anybody, you can go up there to see him or if you pay him enough he'll pack all his stuff up and come out to you". So ever since then I've decided that if I can ever get a couple of songs together I'm going up there to see him.
Oh man I guess I'm gonna have to dig out some Jesus Lizard while I'm at it. I can't get enough of David Yow, never got to see them but I've heard some of the funniest stories about that guy. Funny and gross, not in a funny gross G.G. Allen poop kind of way but just in a funny fall off the speaker while dancing, bust you head and pass out cold kind of a way.
JackJack - Posted - 05/22/2007: 20:47:58
The Jesus Lizard! Yeah! I saw 'em in San Francisco opening up for Mudhoney in the early 90's. I love that song "Mouth Breather"
"Don't get me wrong He's areal nice guy, but.... He's a mouth breather!"

David Yow must've been on good behavior that night, nothing too memorable other than the mass amounts of spit flying outta his mouth with each word.

DKB - Posted - 05/22/2007: 20:54:31
I have seen the jesus lizard probably 5 times. The first time I saw them was in 91, they opened for Nirvana and dinasour jr. they made Nirvana look like amatuers. There is some great footage of them on you tube. When my old band recorded at jeff pinkus' house he had some great David yow stories none of which will be heard on this site. I think we should list our top 5 most memorable punk shows. mine would be 1984 Flipper when will shatter was still alive. That was my first show and I was exilerated and terrified at the same time. Next would be 1985 Black Flag and the minutemen that night changed my life forever. 1988 butthole surfers on halloween night, if you ever have seen them you will know why. next would be 1991 fugazi, they played every song off of repeater and the first 2 ep's. last would be when my band opened up for Unsane I was honored and blown away at the same time. So now let's hear everyone elses. Be Blessed

All these coincedences DKB, I swear I must have met you sometime back in the day.

Did someone mention Elvis Costello?

fstylemb1 - Posted - 05/22/2007: 22:55:40
black flag, the minutemen, lords of the new church, etc... in 1984. awesome shows. i think we played fugazi's 1st show outside of dc in '87 or '88. played shows with quite a few folks. scratch acid, killdozer, 7 day tour with samhain, afghan whigs, descendents, man they were all great. saw big black a few times. some guys from my old band went on to form slint and recorded w/ albini. you guys are making me have flashbacks!!! somebody turn up the banjer!!!

I just watched the first half of the movie "American Hardcore." Anybody else seen it? It's bringing back tons of memories and they have interview and footage of all kind of bands I thought were just gone in memory, SSD, Void, Negative Approach, just to name a few.

Hey guys, there is an awsome new film out here in the UK called 'This Is England', its sumises perfectly the early 80s skinhead scene in the UK and if you get a chance to see it do.
I remember being at school in the early 80s and this film is bang on in so far as the politics and attitude of the time.
BTW Split Lip Rayfields 'The Kiss of Death', such a great tune, blistering banjo.
Regards from London.

I described them as the type of guys who would show up to a party uninvited, drink all your beer, and then kick your a and leave with the rest of the keg. Just watched the second half of "American Hardcore". There is such great footage of all these bands (Especially Bad Brains) I highly recommend it. I forgot just how angry we were back in the day, I'm glad I'm over it and not holding onto that weight. country frank-Ever see UK-DK? (Think that's what it was called). Had Exploited, UK Subs, Addicts, and a bunch of other band footage from your part of the world. It's amazing how from late 70's to late 80's all over the place, there was this massive surge of a punk culture, and now we're all reaching middle age (or reached it). Nobody else would really get what it was about, or how it felt to be there. Ah, the memories, thanks ya'll.

Oh for crying out loud! Jack I just realized I haven't sent your mug out yet.... I'm an idiot. You should have sent me an email berating my integrity or something I'm going up to the post office today. Look at that, is there anything the Punk meets Bluegrass thread isn't good for? Not only can you find out about good music and relive great memories, it can remind you of what a jerk you are too, Thanks Punk meets Bluegrass thread <3<3<3
Anyhow I haven't seen the American Hardcore movie yet but I did have the companion book that came out with it, great stuff in there. My buddy stole that along with my "Our Band Could Be Your Life" book to put on his coffee table. Talk about middle-aged, can you imagine when you were 15 or so and saying something like that. Life is interesting.
Uncle Tic, I don't really play banjo but I've thought about doing something similar on fiddle. The problem is that it's hard to find tunes that work or at least for me it is. There's a fine line between coming up with a cool arrangement and sounding like an idiot when it comes to doing any kind of rock on the fiddle. It seems like the banjo is more accommodating to modern songs either that or else I just need to practice more and learn how to make my fiddle sound good in that context.
JackJack - Posted - 06/08/2007: 14:48:05
SP, I thought you'd forgotten all about that mug. Can't wait to display it in my living room glass display cabinet (talk about it, middle aged). .
Uncle Tic - there is somebody (can't remember his name) around the BHO that mentions that he wants to start or is in a band called Maiden Kentucky -- bluegrass Iron Maiden covers and such. Try searching for him, you guys might have material to trade. Another member- Jammer might have some metal tabs also, he plays electric banjo and is a Van Halen fan.

I just listened to Woodsong's #439 with Uncle Monk (Tommy Ramone's group). Definately worth a listen to hear Tommy talk about folk music versus punk. Tommy even talks about being heavily bluegrassed influenced.

Great thread. Reminds me of a few years ago, as a skater listening to Minor Threat, Dagnasty, All, Descendents, Bad Brains etc. During this time I was taking banjo lessons, I'd show up for the Thursday night banjo lessons wearing a GBH shirt (Leather Bristles Studs and Acne). Talk about strange looks from your banjo teacher! I like bluegrass for some of the same reasons I listened to hardcore....heart and belief in what they are singing, it's not top 40 (and radio in the late 80's early 90's sucked) where you can actually see the dollar signs in the musicians eyes.
philbywan - Posted - 06/14/2007: 13:25:12
Just listened to the track samples of Uncle Monk - its pretty good! Great to see any of the Ramones still kicking, I saw them many times back in the day. But here's my question - wouldn't Tommy's leather scratch the crap out of the back of his banjo?
How can ya be a 3 finger picker when ya only got 2 nostrils?
lala - Posted - 06/15/2007: 20:19:50
Actually, I played with Uncle Monk about a week ago. No banjo - he plays mandolin, with Claudia Tienan on guitar.

He's doing good. The Bad Brains are releasing a new album at the end of June called "Build a Nation" produced by Adam Yauch from the Beastie Boys. They're on tour right now and HR is being really good about taking his meds and meeting with his sponsor.

I was talking about your avatar but I am stoked bad brains are doing it again. I saw them in 85 or 86 when I against I came out and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen but after that their albums didnt do it for me. Any idea what the new stuff is like? By the way welcome to the hangout. Be Blessed

Bad Brains reunion? Hope it works out for them and they get along. I saw BB in the early/mid 90's with a different singer and it was rather dissapointing. Not the same w/o HR.
Now, a week or so after watching American Hardcore, I have to say I feel they left a lot out. I know there was ton's to cover but they ended the movie in 86 and left you feeling like punk was dead and over, leaving us wiith the Cro Mags as one of the "most definitive punk rock bands" (quoted from a Cro Mag member) which is a crock of doo. There was at least another 4-5 years of great punk attitude in music being put out before the Grunge era took over. What about the "cross over into metal" stuff like DRI, Poison Idea, and the Accused. Some bands over-did the metal/rock-n-roll and sucked, but there were still a few years left before I feel punk "do it your own way" attitude died.

fstylemb1 - Posted - 06/19/2007: 17:07:01
saw the Bad Brains in mid 80s. Probably the best show I had ever seen. HR was awesome. I heard later in that tour, HR had to be strapped into a chair because he was going out of his mind! The last record I really got into of theirs was "Quickness", very in your face! I still love the old ROIR tape. I hope they play close to Louisville!

I just finished watching that documentary. I thought it was pretty great if for no other reason than the footage of all those bands. You're right, the Bad Brains footage is worth the price alone. It's true that they left tons out. Still, an interview-based documentary is limited by the people they choose to interview. I'm really glad that the Brains were featured as much as they were. Also, how about the footage of Minor Threat, GangGreen, Die Kreuzen(!!), and that version of Boiling Point from SSD was just flat out amazing! Ahh, it brought back some great memories. Jack Grisham and the interviews with some of the gang members also brought back some bad memories. I was surprised that they left out the Dead Kennedys and hardly mentioned Suicidal both of whom had a huge impact on american hardcore. Other than a quick interview with Brandon Cruz, they virtually ignored the entire Nardcore scene which was huge (Agression, Ill Repute, Stalag 13, Dr Know, etc) At least they mentioned the Necros, 7 Seconds and Misfits and spent a bit of time on MDC. Lastly, I realize that you can only do so much in a 2 hour documentary. I still really, really loved it despite my critcisms. Cal

Ok, just in case ya'll haven't seen the Ace of Spades video by Hayseed Dixie, there you go.
Personally, I like their idea(s), but I think they lack the edge. Maybe seein' them live they'd be cooler, or maybe a different approach in the studio production room, but I just feel it's just missing something. And don't say "electric instruments", because take a look at Split Lip Rayfield video, they have the edge I'm talkin' about.
I just ordered a Split Lip Rayfield CD.

this is a great thread. one of the things that drew me to old time and traditional bluegrass was the raw energy of it, having come from a pretty punk/indie rock background. i hadn't thought about the other similarities, but now that i do, i see a lot of them. anyone like Langhorne Slim? he's a pretty good example, i think anyway. thanks for keeping this thread alive!

I'm diggin' the Avett Brothers, a band from North Carolina. They're pretty close to punk/bluegrass on some songs. Kinda like Old Crow only more raw sounding.
