I am going to an auction this friday  that has a Colt 22 single action pistol. I think it is a third generation model as it has an adjustable rear sight. It looks to be in good shape. What is it worth? It has about a 6 inch barrel.

I've got a 60s 9 shot model and I wouldn't sell it for $1000 but that's just me. I can take that gun out shooting all day for about $10.00 and it is deadly accurate. I think it could be quite possibly the most fun to shoot gun I own. $500 would be a real good price.

Those Colts are nice ,I haven't shot one in years.I have a bull barrel ruger and a 9 shot high standard that shoots very well.

Here's a decent listing for comparison:

But single action,,,,,what do you do fan the hammer to get a few shots in a row?

don't mean to be pedantic...but that is a revolver, not a pistol. they are very nice, i think it would be a bit more than $500 these days if in very good condition. i will offer one warning though, it can be very tedious to load .22 cartridges into these via the side gate. so if you are looking for something for plinking, i.e. volume shooting, this might not be the best choice.

I enjoy plinking with a 22 revolver, the slow loading and unloading actually makes more time to talk. I'm one of the dummies that enjoy muzzleloading too though.

Not if you want your gun to last.

colt revolvers I'm not up to date on,    did Colt make any 22's with a frame mounted firing pin? or were they on the hammer like the single action army?

At's ok all my rifles and shot guns are single shot anyway.
I wouldn't know what it would be like to fire 2 shots in a row fast lol. ;)

I've got a few old model Ruger Single Sixes - I know what you mean.

I have to admit though - I like my S&W 617 better. When I'm plinking I only fire it in SA mode so I'm still bringing back the hammer - it's just a lot easier loading and unloading the gun, which is nice, as it holds 10 rounds in the cylinder. So I probably take as long to unload and reload it as you do with a six shooter

It's a single action revolver. Now, that's how to be pedantic. LOL

My neighbor has a single action Colt .22.  It's very cool.

for accuracy, though, I'll take a tight .22 single action revolver WITH GOOD SIGHTS any day of the week.  Won quite a few matches with one.

I have an old model ruger single six that is fun, the most accurate 22 handgun I have is a browning buckmark,  any shooting is fun though.

maby a General Electric GAU-8  for a little plinking would be fun one day

dawgdoc - Posted - 03/27/2012:  12:58:30

The buckmark is a fine .22!   I wish I had one and used to compete neck and neck with a friend of mine against his. I've probably taken more rabbits with my single six than any other; adore that little handgun.  But my old Dan Wesson .22 (swing out cylinder, but single action) is just insane (okay, so it has a 10" bull barrel and aftermarket sights).

I think maybe the Single Sixes suffer a bit in accuracy because they were made to handle both 22 LR and 22 WMR

Mine seem more accurate when I'm using the magnum cylinders and rounds in them than they do when I swap out the cylinders so I can shoot the cheap stuff.

Forrest - Posted - 03/27/2012:  14:00:35

I have a Ruger Single Six that is a ton of fun to shoot.  I also have a Smith & Wesson Model 63 that I carried for many hours tramping around our farm.

My S&W 617 has an 8 3/8 barrel with full underlug - one of my single sixes is a 9" barrel - you gotta love them long barrel 22 revolvers big

I don't have a Buckmark - but I do have an old Belgian made Nomad

I have a couple of Ruger Bearcats that I've never shot.

dat - Posted - 03/27/2012:  14:28:54

a buddy of mine has an old Colt single action 2 that will outshoot my Ruger single six any day of the week, even though the single six shoots ok. kinda like BConk said though, it does have the barrel diameter for the 22 mag which is 224 instead of 222

blockader - Posted - 03/27/2012:  17:24:40

i too have a bearcat, though mine sees a lot of rough use! its my utility .22 handgun while i have a Ruger Mark II Government for finer duty. my Dad has a colt woodsman that is the finest .22 i have ever shot.

i didn't mean to suggest that a single action .22 couldn't be fun, just that poking each round in a little hole, rotating the cylinder, repeating and then ejecting each spent casing one at a time with the push rod can get to be a bit tedious after 100 rounds!

I've got the same gun - govt. target model. I put a $40 red dot scope on it....happy with the results so far big

That's 30 rounds of Federal automatch ammo inside of 2.5"

dat, I've got a few of them old Colts. Never seen one with a hammer mounted firing pin in a rimfire, but that don't mean that they never made one. Also, all of mine are six shooters.

Forrest - Posted - 03/28/2012:  08:26:33

I also have a Ruger Bearcat.  It's a fun little pistol to shoot, although I must agree about the shell ejection part being a pain.  I recently let my 8 year old son shoot it (with direct supervision) and he was overjoyed.  It's the perfect size for him.

No need to shoot them  -  not very accurate as are the Single Sixs.  I bought a collection of Single Sixs a number of years ago including three or four that were specially made for a gun shop (in Arizona, I think).  Most of mine are the pre-safety mechanism days.  I have a couple of the Bearcats new in the box and plan on leaving them there!

sideways - Posted - 03/28/2012:  19:00:51

I have 2 Bearcats. I found one at a yard sale last year that was made in 1961, still in the box, unfired with the original bill of sale and a hand written "will". The second owner had died and I bought it from the remaining family. I gave it to my daughter as an investment, but she started shooting it and it has now had over 500 rounds shot through it. She said that they were made to shoot and not to look at. The original price was $39.95.
