I recently bought a used Cortley 5 string banjo. I am new to the banjo scene and am interested in learning to play. Problem with banjo is that the 5th string tuner slips and unable to keep tension on 5th string. Question: can i replace the tuner with a new one or is there some compound like for fiddle pegs to keep them from slipping. i see that the 5th string tuner is a friction device . Any ideas Please. This banjo appears to be the CJ100 or CJ 330

Try tightening the screw that holds the plastic button on the tuner first.

It is as Fathand says. Tighten the screw just enough to hold the tension. Over tightening causes the tuner to 'jump' instead of moving smoothly.

I recommend installing a new geared 5th tuner. You'll never regret it.

Agreed, but it is not just a straight swap and fit (usually). The hole has to be widened to fit the new peg (generally), and has to be done properly!

ok i did tighten screw on tuner ... it did quit slipping ... but had to over tighten so it does jump instead of smooth so I will replace with geared tuner as soon as I can obtain one from SFI
