I wasn't there but my guess is: Josh was reaching for the mic stand when lester was in the middle of introducing him so he could say a few words on the grand Carnegie Hall stage when Lester finished & that was Lester's way of nicely telling Josh to back off!  Uncle Josh was quite the showman.

As you can hear on the CD, Jake and Josh would do comedy routines together, which is why Lester refers to Josh as Jake's "partner" in his introduction.

One of their standard "bits" was that when Lester would introduce "Uncle" Josh Graves, Josh would shake Lester's hand vigorously for about 15 seconds, and Lester would say to him (referring to his own arm), "You can turn that loose now, it's not a pump handle you know."

I downloaded a recent version of the concert. I had forgotten how good and professional they really were. It reminded me that I did yell a request which I later heard on the recording, but II can no longer remember what it was. It WASN'T Martha White and I didn't have a cow bell...

I was there, the 3rd time I saw them. I'd never miss them when they came to NYC, first time was at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, Joan Baez opener, Jan. 1961. Changed my life!

I wasn't sitting anywhere near the stage at Carnegie Hall, wasn't yelling for Martha White. I later met and became friends with the guys who did, named Hank and Jerry, from New Jersey. They heard about the concert far in advance and got front row center seats. That's how their voices could get on the recording, and I recognize both of their voices on the record. Hank and I were later in a band together, and cowrote the tune Orange Mt. Special.

No, not that one (I checked the album and they mentioned the Merle Travis was also no the bill which is how I know I wasn't there). However, I did see them in earlier NYC then that (probably another location) when Joan Baez was alson the bill and did one number with them. I think it was "Little Darling".

Must be the one Pete mentioned above.

Everytime I turn on my mp3 player in the truck I close my eyes and pretend im there....then the sound of car horns and ppl yelling curses my way as I swerve out of my lane snaps me back to reality. Seriously though I play that Bear Family CD almost everytime I get in the truck. What a treat it musta have been to have seen it live.

One of the worst mistakes ever, is that this session isn't somehow on video..how great it would be for us that were not there,  to see, as well as hear this moment in history, but at least we can hear it, I listen to some of it at least once a day, and I never get tired of hearing the same thing..best bluegrass show ever in my mind..

Bluegrass in New York City's Carnegie Hall  in the early 60s would be like serving grits at the Waldorf Astoria. I am sure the promoters never expected to fill the hall.

One of my all time favorite recordings. Not only the music, I lover to hear Lester Flatt talk on stage. He has the smoothest voice and stage presense in the industry.

I was there.

I was also at Game six of this year's World Series.  Stayed for the whole thing.

Also at Game six in 1975 in Boston for Carlton Fisk's homerun.

And I handed Jimi Hendrix his guitar pick before he played the National Anthem at Woodstock.

And I taped the lock on the door at the Watergate Hotel.  Twice in one night.

Okay, only one of those is true.
