I've been playing banjo a good 6 months, and I'm looking at an upgrade in the 600-1000 dollar category. I like a good plunky sound, and I'm wondering if anybody knows the best kind of resonator banjo I should get? Also I like a pretty banjo... No offense to Deering, I'm sure they're great banjos but I just dislike their look a little bit...

For a plunky sound with a resonator you'll probably want to look for one w/o a tone ring. Hope this helps.

That does help thanks! At least now I know a little better what I'm looking for...

A good banjo in that price range is either a Recording King RK-R35 or a vintage Gold Star (circa '75-'85). Those both have pretty solid bluegrass sounds though. Not sure if that's the sound you're after, but they are great banjos for the money. Check out a sound clip of an RK-R35 by searching here on the BHO. Wildjimbo has some mighty fine clips of him playing one.
