Ok. It's a little quiet on here, is it not?
So, who's going to stump up a song/tune for 'Tune of the month'?
Come on, someone must have a tune?

Richard

I agree.

Richard, I want to throw something up on YouTube next week. I don't know what tune yet, so if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears. I think I might do "After You're Gone." Is that a good choice?

NYCJazz - Posted - 06/30/2011:  07:27:11

I can't get this out of my head.

That's a nice little melody, and it's handled beautifully.

I do like 'After You're Gone'
Anybody else happy with that or want to do something else?

I saw the Preservation Hall JB in Providence around 1987 with the Humphrey brothers, TBone player was different, The banjo player was Narvin Kimble. I did get to have a nice chat with him that evening. Lots of fun.
I think for the tune of the month, After You've Gone is a good choice, I just might record my own version of it.

No banjo here, but here's a video of me on guitar with my buddy Chuck King. We did it 30 minutes ago.

Nice one, Tony. I like the last note with the right hand on fretboard. My kind of guitar playing - just laying down some nice chords and good rhythm. Chuck, excellent as always.

Compass56 - Posted - 07/01/2011:  02:07:39

Thanks Rob. I love doing duos with Chuck because I get to really listen to his great tone, ideas, and style. As for that last note, yeah, I blew that one. I planned on doing a harmonic there but it definitely didn't work. Clam city!

I heard your new stuff and loved it! I will purchase it this weekend.

So are we set with 'after you're gone'?

Tony. I will have a look at your clip when I get home.

Compass56 - Posted - 07/01/2011:  07:30:37

Richard, I guess so. I think the standard key for "After You've Gone" is Eb. I'll probably do it in C. (Unlike most of you tenor masters, I LOVE the first string.) I can't do it until next week. My banjo is in the shop getting a little tune up. (intonation, head tension, restring, clean, etc.)

RUBY2 - Posted - 07/01/2011:  07:51:50

No probs Tony
Well it will probably take me all the month of July to learn/play it to the level that people can tell what it is lol :-)
Ta
Richard
Ps Steve. Am I ok to start to learn that one too along with what I am already tackling?

I love the use of your upstrokes. Smashing stuff.
I do love your playing and watch many of your other clips frequently.
Thanks for posting :-)

thanks Richard!
looking forward to other listers version of this wonderful song....

Paolo, that was great. 'Very bluesy.

Compass56 - Posted - 07/03/2011:  02:14:08

My one and only banjo is still in the repair shop, so I haven't been able to post a new banjo clip. I hope to get the banjo back Monday or Tuesday. After I do so, I'll work something up and post it Wednesday or Thursday.

Dogface - Posted - 07/03/2011:  07:28:26

Tony,
What's wrong with the banjo that it needed to be in a repair shop ?

About once a year or so, I have Jason Burns do a whole restring, cleaning, intonation, head tension thing on my tenor banjo and on my guitar. (I got the guitar back a couple of days after I got home from NOLA.) I have him do the same thing to my 5-string banjo and lap steel every two years.

I'm itching to get my tenor banjo back.

Hi Richard,

Yes, work on this tune. I am not at home for a couple of days. A friend's wife has passed away so I am in Albany for the funeral.

I will post my version of this tune upon my return. Paolo, very nice version! I like the alternate chords you used. I will be offline for a few days now.

Man, you do need another banjo !  I'm lost without one and to that end I'm likely gonna get a mini banjo to take on trips...something with an 8" pot, maybe a 17 fret neck...not heavy but decent sounding.

RUBY2 - Posted - 07/05/2011:  10:25:30

Hi Mark

I agree, got to have a spare LOL.
Surely you can never have enough banjos.
I have a 16 fret Vega little wonder open back that is ever so light compared to the vega pro.
It fits great behind the rear headrests of the car on the parcel shelf.

On a note of TOTM. Do you have a lead sheet with chord boxes?

Are you going to have a go at this months tune?

Ta

Richard

Compass56 - Posted - 07/05/2011:  10:25:53

Banjo is ready! I'm picking it up around 4:00 P.M. today.

I can't afford another tenor, nor do I have room for one in this little apartment. My next purchase will be a really nice Deering 5-string in 2012 or 2013.

RUBY2 - Posted - 07/05/2011:  12:51:05

Ah-ha
Found my copy of it. :-/
I didn't remember that I had actually 'learned' this song already with Steve DOH!
The worst thing is, I can hardly remember how to play it.
Why don't I have a better memory :-(
Ta
Richard

Compass56 - Posted - 07/05/2011:  13:28:05

Richard, I can't remember if I have a good memory or not!

By the way, I just got the banjo back. I'm going to work on a version of that song for about an hour, and I then post the results.

Compass56 - Posted - 07/05/2011:  14:02:07

Ok, here it is. I hope you're not too disgusted by the weird color thing going on at the beginning of the video or by my weak playing throughout. I was itching get started, and I couldn't wait until my playing got back into shape after my ten day tenor layoff, so I went ahead and shot a version of "After You've Gone" as soon as I got home with the banjo.  I did so without really knowing the tune completely, but all in all, I'm happy with it. What do you think?

Hi Tony.
That was great!
Enjoyed the hat and the smiles :-)
Great stuff, watched it X4 times in a row LOL.
Some nice little fill in runs etc.
Thanks for posting.

Richard
Ps started practicing it last night, might take a week or two to get it up to speed to post though. :-)

Compass56 - Posted - 07/06/2011:  03:51:37

Hey thanks Richard. I tried. I'm glad you liked it.

Does anybody out there have any idea what caused that weird color thing at the beginning?

Tony L.

banjopa - Posted - 08/27/2011:  15:13:59

Well I completely forgot about the Tune of the Month and my promise to record my version of it until today when I was going over the posts on the 4 string version of the BHO. So I decided to "git 'er done"!

Here is my version of "After You've Gone"

youtube.com/watch?v=dHLFI0RsNW8

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together today while we sit here waiting for Hurricane Irene to pay us an unwelcomed visit.

my best to you all,

Steve Caddick

Polle Flaunoe - Posted - 08/27/2011:  23:25:21

Steve,

Great - as was your arrangement for Jazz Banjo Magazine. I have used this and other of your arrangements when introducing chord melody on a tenor to some of my students - plus I have "stolen" some of your splendid two-finger chord settings for my own use - LOL!

Whatever happened regarding the magazine? It suddenly stopped - I was always looking forward for the next issue to be released.

Regards and thanks

Polle

banjopa - Posted - 08/28/2011:  05:47:03

Hi Polle,

Thanks for your kind words! Glad you can make use of some of what I do also. John Mumford is currently working on a new issue of JBM.

I have contributed a new song and notation/diagrammed solo for it. I do not know when he will go online with it. I di come up with a new idea for it. Put the song on You Tube!

Compass56 - Posted - 08/28/2011:  06:30:06

Steve, that was extremely well done. Your ability never ceases to amaze me.

Polle Flaunoe - Posted - 08/28/2011:  06:55:45

Steve,

Thanks - I´ll keep an eye open for a new issue - this is great news!  And I´ll of course sign up for a renewed subscription - I hope, that all other 4-string players here at BHO will do the same! ( jazzbanjo.com/jbmindex.htm )

BTW - I´ve followed you, watched your vids and purchased your CD´s for many years - my top-favorite is your interpretation of Take Your Pick youtube.com/watch?v=Sk8DaXX_4SQ - do you know why?  Simply - besides splendid playing - because you in this recording not in any way are using string slabs or head smacks - for me being a sort of purist - such percussive effects are very disturbing! LOL! They distract me and also many of my banjo buddies.

Please take no offense of this blunt statement.

Kind regards

Polle

Rob MacKillop - Posted - 08/28/2011:  07:23:40

Oh, Steve, that was wonderful. Even without the help of the video, it certainly sounds like you play with a smile. I know Irene won't get the better of you!

RUBY2 - Posted - 08/28/2011:  13:25:54

Hi Steve.
Loved that!
You looked to be enjoying it too :-)
Going to try to work with this one as well as the Avalon tune too. See how we go with them over the next two weeks.
Ta
Richard
Ps have a nice holiday ;-)

RUBY2 - Posted - 11/13/2011:  12:54:01

Well I've sneakily been putting some of my daily practice into getting this song up to speed enough to be worthy of posting.
I think I'm about 2 or 3 weeks off being able to do it so people can see/hear what the sing is ;-)
Watch this space.

Richard

Hi Steve, great playing as always!
best wishes for Irene, here in Italy we are just stepping out from another kind of calamity... let's hope!

Hi All

Well its only taken me 6 months to record and post a video clip of 'After You've Gone'. :-/

Rob MacKillop - Posted - 12/15/2011:  13:21:43

Well done, Richard! OK, there was a wee bit hesitation here and there, but overall it was pretty good. Involved a LOT of left hand movements, some of them quite tricky. I really see an improvement every time you play. Excellent!

RUBY2 - Posted - 12/15/2011:  13:27:59

Hi Rob

Thanks!

That means a lot :-)

I think I will wait another 6 months to post another clip, see if I can show some more improvement ;-)

Maybe we can change the title to BAT (Bi-Annaul Tune)

Richard

Richard, Nice job of it. I can see the progress you are making. Now to learn how to smile a little while playing! :)

RUBY2 - Posted - 12/15/2011:  13:57:49

Thanks Steve :-))
Yes, I agree.... But that means I have to multi-task :-/
I already have enough trouble getting the right and left hand to do what I want of them at the same time.
