Is there anyone in S.E. Michigan interested in doing backyard bluegrass jams during the summer months. Getting together at different locations in somebodys backyard on any given week night or weekend? I am just now learning the banjo, so I'm not very good, but certainly enjoy the music. Just a thought for those who might be interested.

I'm NOT Metro Detroit, more like 15 miles North of Ann Arbor but yes to your question on the backyard picking. We do a lot of it on the weekends at my family's place in Northern Michigan but during the week or on weekends off I would love to pick locally (less than an hours drive?).

I'd be interested in that. Sterling Heights here.

Yes, I like to get out and play now and then when time permits. I have jammed a couple of times with Jeanie (Sterling grass), she is quite good at both banjo and guitar. She knows a lot of the old bluegrass standards as well as some more contemporary stuff. Also check out the Michigan pickers group here on BHO if you haven't already, Tom
tkv - Posted - 02/04/2011: 15:49:51
I'm not sure where to look for Michigan Pickers Group here on BHO Tom. I'm not very bright, so any help would be well appreciated.
Thank you thomas

Thomas, if you are looking for jams north of Flint, I can tell you about a few. I haven't posted anything on them because it seems like most of the Michigan group is down south or over on the west side of the state.

Yep, I'd be real interested. I've got a little less than 2 years of old time clawhammer experience and almost no jam experience. I need to learn how to play well with others.

Hi Bill, I just happen to know your son Andrew. My daughter's husband is Becky's cousin. I've been wanting to met you for awhile now. Lets get together soon and setup some backyard bluegrass this summer. My daughter's name is Tommie.

Thomas, sorry it took so long to get back to you. I find that some of the local jams are not advertised and unless you know someone who goes you don't hear about them. Of course once you go, you will get info pretty fast. Presently there are jams in:

This list is not current enough to assume they are all still active or that the times haven't changed, so I'd suggest you use the contact number to make sure your trip is worthwhile.
Hope this is helpful to all. Karen

Chris, sorry that I did not get back to you sooner. I have posted contact info on the Calendar section of the Hangout. This is a new facility and Gordy Shelest has just established his own web site where jam information will be posted (although I do not know what it is). Give him a call for further details.

Nice meeting you Thomas. Looking forward to next month's jams. I will bring you one of my Murphy Henry DVDs to borrow.

bobb62, I'm away on vacation. Yes the group did meet. We'll meet in March on the 15th. People new to jam sessions are always welcome. Keep in mind that we all were new to jams at one time. When I am there I make it a point to make sure new comers are welcome and included at whatever level they are comfortable. I also am interested in joining Tom in his back yard this summer. It's a bit too chilly for now. Terry Treppa

Thanks Terry. I went on Tuesday and it was very inviting and fun. I am looking forward to going again in March.
I would like to punish Tom's neighbors ears also (when the weather breaks).

I heard that a burger joint on Jefferson and Southfield has bluegrass jams right by the Detroit River in the summer. I have never gone, so I don't know what it is like, but if you are near there, it is on the river side of Jefferson, where Southfield dead ends. It uses to be Carter's Hamburgers, but the name changed awhile back.
Good greasy burgers and fries, so you might want to stop in and ask about it. It is in Ecorse, about a half mile from Wyandotte.
tkv - Posted - 02/19/2011: 18:46:00
Sounds like the right place for me Rob. I will certainley be there. Also Jeanie, I have your number, I will be giving you a call.

The Shelest Music jams held once a month are geared to all levels of players and all types of acoustic instruments as was evidenced at the last one held 13 March. If we have enough newbies (those described as new to jamming), there is another large room where we can split off so that the new-to-jamming players will feel less intimidated. There will be a leader for that group as well to ensure that everyone is getting off on the right foot and having fun.
raykor - Posted - 03/22/2011: 11:29:48
I'm in Warren,MI.I wish someone would email me when there is a jam going on.I would like to attend. Thanks, all!

There is a jam every wednesday in Freedonia Michigan, near Marshall. When arriving someone will ask for two songs, and there are plenty to back up. It is all accoustic except for the mics. No electric instruments. All instruments welcome. People dance, and a good time is had.
John Allison - Posted - 04/19/2011: 06:49:58
Thomas,
Shelest Music is located at 22410A Harper Ave in St Clair Shores. This is on the East side of Harper between 8 and 9 Mile (almost across the street from Gilberts Lodge). Parking in the rear. Summertime (weather permitting) probably hold the jams in the parking lot. These are held the 2nd Sunday of the month from 2 til 5 PM. Once summer comes and we are outside, I can envision the jams going much later. Also, some of the group goes over to Gilberts Lodge afterwards for food and libation.
TTreppa - Posted - 04/19/2011: 08:22:49
I was at the March jam and had a very good time. John runs a good jam. After the jamming we went to Gilberts across the street. That makes this jam very special because most of the jams that I have been at all we did was play and go home. The conversations and friendships take place in jamming and eating. If you can't jam I'm sure you can eat.

John Allison - Posted - 04/23/2011: 17:47:33
Thanks for the compliment Terry. It is really you guys, though, who make the jam.
