The pump is located right in front of the heating unit thingy and the pipes come down from the ceiling right in front of the filter... I'm not explaining well. Let me take a picture.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/22/2011: 19:37:20
The pipe on the right is what he had to redo. He had it going up straight in front of the filter there:

1four5 - Posted - 07/22/2011: 19:50:17
Now that makes sense. Silly plumber.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/23/2011: 07:22:06
He wasn't thrilled when I made him redo it, but I feel like he should have taken the time to think about why there was that weird bend in the pipe.
Of course I probably paid for him to redo it (more hours).

As long as he buys the drinks tonight...
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/23/2011: 19:14:17
As hot as I am, I want to be drinking at home tonight.
OM45GE - Posted - 07/24/2011: 16:21:14
Cheers.

More info than we needed, did the plumber come back over or were you hot and drinking with somebody else?
1four5 - Posted - 07/25/2011: 07:14:50
When they wake up and he leaves, and she realizes she's late for work... then she gets her but chewed for being late, and then get caught up on work, then maybe we will get an update on how last night went...
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/25/2011: 07:24:31
I was drinking alone in an air conditioned room with an ice pack on my neck.
dat - Posted - 07/25/2011: 08:40:09
SO HE JUST LEFT?
do we need to go up there and have a talk with that plumber, you don't just leave a lady like that, where's my shotgun
1four5 - Posted - 07/25/2011: 09:24:50
He had other jobs to do, and he had to get cracking

We have no internet at work today. Some sort of major problem at Comcast. I went across the street to get an estimate on my car and they said they had no internet either. No internet means I can't work. Our database, imaging system, email, shared drives, reporting software, and scheduling software are all accessed via internet.
I got a call from the stepfather of the girl who hit me. He'd like to just give me a check for the damage so that her insurance rates don't go up. The damage is pretty minimal (the estimate is less than $400 and then I'll need a rental car for two days) but we've both reported the accident to our insurance companies. I'm not sure if he gives me a check if it will make any difference to his daughter's insurance and I don't know if it's generally a bad idea to do that kind of thing.
dat - Posted - 07/25/2011: 12:36:30
it is cheaper on his rates if his insurance does not have to pay, problem is that if the insurance co. pays, they have to look at it before the repairs are done, if he says he will pay and he doesn't, it'll be too late to claim it on insurance, if he says he will pay and pays up front then the body shop finds more hidden damage once they get started, he may not want to pay the added amount, depends on how much you trust him
OM45GE - Posted - 07/25/2011: 12:37:06
I think your conscience is telling you what to do.
It's scary how dependent we are on computers and the internet. If I can't connect I might as well take the day off.
dat - Posted - 07/25/2011: 12:51:29
if the computers are down at the grocery store, they won't let you buy a loaf of bread
1four5 - Posted - 07/25/2011: 13:13:33
I wonder if you work wants to buy my computer. It works fine...
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/25/2011: 13:27:50
I remember going to a restaurant years ago (like 1990-ish) and they couldn't seat us because the power was out and they couldn't take orders or anything without power because their computers were down.
I knew then that computers taking over the world was a bad idea.

I said that in the 80's
1four5 - Posted - 07/25/2011: 15:57:02
The only thing my computer is good at is collecting dust bunnies under the moniter. My 11 years old moniter is about the size of a pick-up truck.
OM45GE - Posted - 07/25/2011: 17:08:34
You couldn't get inside the building I work in if the computers were down.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/26/2011: 05:50:20
The job I was at before I started here at the college was in a building with all sorts of security stuff. My mom asked once about my safety when I told ehr I was planning to go in to work on a weekend. I said, "I have a swipe card to get into the parking garage, there's a code to get into the elevator from the parking garage, there's a code to take the elevator up to my floor, and I have a key for both my office and to get into the bathroom." On top of that, you couldn't get to any of the floor via the stairs--all the doors to the individual floors were locked so you could only go down to the ground floor and exit out the back. My swipe key for the parking garage also would open the front door to the building after hours.
My supervisor there used to tell us about how once she was in the bathroom when the power went out. The fire alarms went off. There's no windows in the bathroom, so it was completely dark. She had to use her cell phone to find her way out of the bathroom and then to get down the stairs--the stairwell also didn't have windows. When she got out, she found the fire department in front of the building debating whether they should break down the front door or not. With the power out, the front doors had automatically locked. They didn't want to break in if there was no fire but if there was a fire, they didn't want to not break in.
Because of my supervisor's experience, the company bought those emergency flashlights that plug in. So if the power went out we could grab a flashlight.
It always made me insecure, though, that the stairs only let you go all the way down. I think there's a lot of buildings like that. I understand they don't want someone sneaking into the building, but it scares me to think you could get into the stairwell and then discover the fire is below you and you can't get out. The IT building here at the college is like that.
OM45GE - Posted - 07/26/2011: 06:13:34
Our building is so advanced that if there's ever a fire they say we only need to evacuate the floor the fire's on and the ones directly above and below. They claim that there's so little flammable material and such advance fire fighting systems that almost nothing could get big enough to force a general evacuation. Fire drills are interesting because these giant shutters close and cut the floors off from each other. You can get down the stairs and they are emergency lit by separate circuits.

It's a great building to work in. We get several thousand visitors a year just to see the building.
1four5 - Posted - 07/26/2011: 07:54:01
In one building I worked at they used a Haylon system. If there was ever a fire, you had a minute to get out before the automatic doors closed. If you didn't make it you suffocated, as it removed the oxygen from the air. Serious stuff... but hey we were running jet engines in there. In my whole career...I'm glad I never got to see the system in action.
OM45GE - Posted - 07/26/2011: 09:31:39
I remember a Haylon system in a data center I supported once. It supposedly wouldn't hurt the computers. Made the people inside feel a lot less important than the machines.
1four5 - Posted - 07/26/2011: 11:58:56
Lets just all retire and let computers take care of everything

Sounds rather like the Titanic. "Sure, this ship will never sink...."

How about a robot computer that gives back rubs on command, otherwise it's cleaning the house.

Oh! And back scratches! I really need an automatic back scratcher!
1four5 - Posted - 07/26/2011: 20:19:10
We might be on to something here. Should we make our back scratching computer house cleaning robots resemble anyone?

Maybe a Chris robot clone?

The good news is that Texas may be getting some relief by the end of the week. The bad news is that a tropical storm is heading towards the south coast of Texas.
dat - Posted - 07/28/2011: 05:53:50
hopefully we get some rain from it
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 07/28/2011: 06:14:36
Yeah, I heard that on the news this morning. Hopefully it will be helpful rain and won't wash everything away.

We're supposed to get scattered storms today. Unsettled all weekend.

it's 85 here with 79% humidity, hopefully we get some rain, I think the only water around here is sweat
