I believe you're right about that

Now we have to figure out if Comcast dude is cool
OM45GE - Posted - 05/25/2011: 03:56:09
Should we run a background check on him?

today is my brides birthday, she has been worried about turning 40 since she turned 39 last year, now that she has done it she can quit worrying about it
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/25/2011: 06:57:12
I don't understand why people get so weird about their age. 40 is just another year. I like the perspective I have now at my age.
And I'm proud of these wrinkles and grey hairs, thank you very much. I've earned them.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/25/2011: 07:07:16
There's an intersection I drive through every day that is prime real estate for the local panhandlers. There's usually four out there--one at each corner. There's one guy I see every morning who had a big sign "Curb Patrol" and a garbage bag. He'll take any trash out of your car and if you give him a couple of bucks, well, that's cool, too. He's very friendly, always waving and smiling. And if you have a moment, he'll chat with you.
Yesterday I drove by and he had a new sign that said that this was his last week on curb patrol. He's found a full time job and will be starting next week. The sign ended, "Thank you everyone and God bless."
I went out last night and got him a little gift card from Kohls so that he could buy new clothes for his new job. I remember when I was out of work for so long and then found a job, I desperately needed clothes but I also needed money for food and bills. I thought this would give him a little bit of a head start.
I'm thrilled to see he's got a job. So nice to know there's a possibility for happy endings even if you end up living on the street.
1four5 - Posted - 05/25/2011: 07:33:36
Ahhh to be 40 again... We have a girl working our neighborhood stop lights, all her sign says is "Homeless". Hopefully she will find the same success
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/25/2011: 07:56:34
There was a woman I saw a couple weeks ago who wasn't having much success. She was all dressed up and wearing make up. I suspect that it was a pride thing--that she had real strong ideas about what is appropriate in public and that you should always look neat and tidy and whatnot. But it didn't make me feel real inclined to give her money.
At the very least she needed to lose the shiny earrings and the purse.
dat - Posted - 05/25/2011: 09:10:34
MABY SHE WAS SELLING INSTEAD OF BEGGING
1four5 - Posted - 05/25/2011: 09:56:25
What interesting about some of our beggers, is that they seem to have plenty of $$ for food, or at least someone is feeding them very well. That's something that raggedy clothes can't hide.
dat - Posted - 05/25/2011: 10:16:46
I was thinking about how lucky I was this morning when I was getting ready for work, I had a job to go to, I had clothes, i had my billfold to put in my pocket, I had my pocket knife to put in another pocket, I had a few dollar bills and some change to put in my pocket, a handfull of keys that fit things that I owned and something to eat before I left
1four5 - Posted - 05/25/2011: 11:04:16
One thing that blows my mind is the jobs around town. Even though I'm retired, I still look at the help wanteds every day, never know when some interesting part time, music, or animal related fun job might come up. The amount of work out there is incredable. I can't believe people say they can't find work. My hats off to the "curb Patrol"!
dat - Posted - 05/25/2011: 12:31:27
the help wanted adds here are pretty slim, always looking for over the road drivers and nurses, that's pretty much all there is
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/25/2011: 12:39:33
When I was on a search committee here at the college, we got 300 applications for position that required a high school diploma or GED. There were people with doctorates and law degrees who applied. It was horribly depressing.
dat - Posted - 05/25/2011: 15:07:27
my bride wants me to get a job closer to home/ less driving/ less gas/ less time away, I could get a closer job, but it would be a large enough cut in pay that I couldn't afford it, and I don't make that much to start with
OM45GE - Posted - 05/25/2011: 16:59:16
I do executive and physician recruiting for a biopharmaceutical company. It's an incredibly gratifying job to offer a great person a great job at a great company. However, it's pretty depressing to see some very well qualified folks who can't find a job and are applying for things way beneath them.
1four5 - Posted - 05/25/2011: 17:26:11
Come to Kansas. Everything from washing dishes to designing airplanes, and hundreds of jobs in between. I talk to my friends at the golf course across the street, and they say it's almost impossible to find people who want to work.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/26/2011: 03:52:28
We've got over 600 openings. It's finding qualified folks that is tough.

I've told myself that I'm going to get through this big project at work that we're just starting. They've made me the functional lead for the project, which will look nice on a resume. When we've got it up and running (should be about a year and a half), I'm going to start looking around a bit.
It's not that I'm unhappy with my job but I'm just getting a little bit of an itch to see more of the world and maybe find some new challenges for my life.

I think I would like to be a park ranger at Yellowstone or Yosemite
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/26/2011: 06:28:21
I know someone who got a park ranger job (or something like that) at Yellowstone right after graduation. I'm not sure if she's still there or not.

maby she can put in a good word for me, or try for two jobs, one for my bride and one for me
1four5 - Posted - 05/26/2011: 07:34:03
I've actually thought about working at the Humaine society. In retrospect, I kind of wich I would have joined the Navy (instead of AF) and did more traveling...
dat - Posted - 05/26/2011: 08:13:12
I'm surprised you didn't get your fill of traveling in the Air Force, my brother and his wife have been all over, just thinking right off, Germany, England, Iraq, Africa, Korea, Kuwait, Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Florida, Washington, Mississippi. I'm not sure where else
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/26/2011: 09:57:49
So when Comcast dude was over the other day he mentioned that the yard right up against the house smelled nasty. "Like someone was urinating there." I was outside yesterday with the dogs and noticed the same thing.
There's a basketball court right across the parking lot from my house. What do you want to bet that guys playing basketball are coming over when I'm not around and going into the yard to pee?
I'm feeling very frustrated. I'm not sure what I can do to stop it but I have no desire to have my yard smell like a toilet.
dat - Posted - 05/26/2011: 10:13:05
220 volt electric concertina wire should stop 'em
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/26/2011: 10:28:38
Keep in mind that the utilities dudes also have to be able to access my yard to get the meter readings.
dat - Posted - 05/26/2011: 10:37:11
OK, 110 volt then
1four5 - Posted - 05/26/2011: 11:08:01
Heck of a way to meet a guy... trying to stop other guys from peeing...
dat - Posted - 05/26/2011: 11:27:29
you may get some lime to spread out, it won't stop them from peeing, but it'll stop the smell
1four5 - Posted - 05/26/2011: 11:43:18
I remember these on AMW as one of the most effective ways (and they are fake) to stop bad guys (second only to big loud dogs) from choosing your house to break into. Might work for the leakyweenies.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/26/2011: 13:27:48
Someone on a different forum suggested a motion detector sprinkler.

Bright lights and a video camera?
1four5 - Posted - 05/27/2011: 07:35:47
Go to the junk yard and get an old toiled and set it up in your yard, with a coin slot.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/27/2011: 17:57:50
Where do you stand on the second amendment? The right to pee vs the right to keep and bear arms?
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/28/2011: 07:27:02
I support the right to arm bears, but I don't know how to handle bears myself so I don't usually do much except read about them in the newspaper or see them on nature documentaries.
I'm assuming this is happening when I'm not at home because I think I'd notice the dogs going nuts to get out if I were at home.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/28/2011: 17:42:22
My mother in law is a 84 year old Lithuanian immigrant, a retired nurse and sweet as can be. They live across the street from some conservation land on q quiet residential street. She pulled be aside the other day to tell me that men were stopping in front of the house to pee. She was so offended and wanted my advice on what to do. I wasn't any more use for her than I am for you. I told her not to watch.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/29/2011: 11:26:01
Since they seem to be doing it when I'm not home, I'm not too concerned about seeing it.
It's the smell in my yard that I'm not thrilled about. Probably getting some lime to put down will be the best route.
1four5 - Posted - 05/29/2011: 11:34:37
You could always try a simple sign. It just might work. At the moment, they don't think anyone knows they are doing it...
OM45GE - Posted - 05/30/2011: 09:55:27
That's a great idea Dean. Could work.
1four5 - Posted - 05/30/2011: 10:11:34
We live on a golf course. Our neighbor got tired of golfers tearing up his lawn, sometimes actually hitting balls out of his yard (even though it's out of bounds). He finally made a big bold sign that said "NO GOLFING OUT OF MY YARD!!!" ... and believe it or not, they hardely ever do it anymore. Some golfers won't even go into his yard to get an off course ball. Signs do work!
OM45GE - Posted - 05/31/2011: 03:34:21
Maybe I'll put up a sign saying "leave $100 bills here."

here I'm away for the weekend and I come back to folks passing out 100 dollar bills

It could be worse. We could be tucking them into g-strings.
