TGIF!

I will have to train my greyhounds not to get the pack with the red dye bomb
OM45GE - Posted - 05/06/2011: 09:25:02
I guarantee you that Toby would go straight for the dye pack. When I walk him he will pick up the first plastic bottle he finds and carry it all the way home. If he finds a second one he will sniff back and forth between the two until he finds the best one to bring home. We recycle them there. He drops them next to the recycle bin.
dat - Posted - 05/06/2011: 09:33:11
my lab would bring in the mail, we'ld go to the mailbox and he would carry what ever mail we had back up to the house, somehow it was always dry and never had tooth holes
1four5 - Posted - 05/06/2011: 10:40:48
My greyhounds always sniff out the mailman's pockets for cookies...
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/06/2011: 11:17:04
I thought I'd share this. I don't know why it's taken me so long to get a picture of this. I drew my avatar from a photo I liked a lot. I have a mouse pad with the original photo on it. I just took a picture of it.

dat - Posted - 05/06/2011: 14:38:00
THAT LOOKS FAMILIAR,
where have I seen that picture before
1four5 - Posted - 05/06/2011: 15:55:47
I didn't know you were an artist! That's cool!

97 degrees today. I want to move to Alaska
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/09/2011: 06:57:15
There's polar bears in Alaska.
dat - Posted - 05/09/2011: 10:11:28
and grizzly bears
OM45GE - Posted - 05/09/2011: 10:48:11
not to mention mosquitos that carry you home to eat later
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/09/2011: 11:39:16
And lots of single men.
1four5 - Posted - 05/09/2011: 11:44:08
And ice and snow and sled dogs and frozen lakes and frost and more snow and ice and cold oh yeah!
OM45GE - Posted - 05/10/2011: 03:28:38
There are 107 men per 100 women in Alaska. In Maryland there are 77.
dat - Posted - 05/10/2011: 06:01:41
more women, just think of the belly aching

This explains a lot.

We wouldn't change the statistics because my wife would come along...
OM45GE - Posted - 05/10/2011: 14:13:38
Hey Dean, I saw a woman walking her greyhound. It was about 55 degrees but the dog had a coat on that covered everything but it's head, tail and legs from the knees down. Are they that sensitive to cold?
1four5 - Posted - 05/10/2011: 14:26:01
Nope. Just sensitive owners. There's a myth in the greyhound circles that says "if you are cold they are cold". We have coats for them, but they are more a hassle than they are worth, and we don't use them much anymore. We even know people that put boots and scarfs on their greyhounds. I'm sorry... I love them, but they are dogs! I take mine out in any weather, no coats. The colder it is the faster we go. We've been out for a two mile jog in single didget temps, in the snow with no trouble, and they have a blast. Our male LOVEs playing in the snow. I would have to say they are more sensitive to the heat (as with any dog) when the temps get in the 90's or higher we take a canteen, and pretty much keep it to an easy walk.

I think that's with most dogs that you see bundles up
OM45GE - Posted - 05/10/2011: 16:15:17
Thanks for the explanation Dean. I thought that might be the case. I keep Toby in a short field cut and he's fine all winter long.
1four5 - Posted - 05/10/2011: 18:06:33
My brother's sled dogs sleep in the snow in the cold NE winters. My neighbors have a sled dog... that's crazy in Kansas... He's got to be miserable. It officially made it to 101 degrees yesterday. The earliest in history that we made it to 100.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/11/2011: 04:07:59
When I was growing up we had a Newfoundland. He HATED summers and would basically just lie around under the porch or in a kiddie wading pool we had for him. He came alive in the winter and loved to romp in the snow.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/11/2011: 05:42:25
When I was a kid we had a Keeshond like that. He lived for winter. Summer was miserable.
My parents' pit bull had really short hair and Dad was always amazed how, in the winter, she would go outside and just flop in the snow on her belly. As she got older she got less tolerant of the cold, but I think that happens to all of us.
flake - Posted - 05/11/2011: 07:35:18
Happened to me.

1four5 - Posted - 05/11/2011: 07:38:22
We have a kiddie pool in the back yard for the greyhounds to lay in. I never remember to fill it, and it's always blowing across the yard in the Kansas wind.
dat - Posted - 05/11/2011: 08:33:17
I never did like the cold, you can't put on enough clothes to be warm and comfortable, but in the heat you can always strip nakkid and drink a cool beverage

See I always feel the other way. I can always put on more clothes. But if you're naked and still hot, ain't nothing left to take off!

I was at Petsmart the other day and they had a display of life vests for dogs right next to a display of the kiddie pools. I don't think most dogs would need a life vest in a kiddie pool. Hamster might. But even a chihuahua should be okay in a kiddie pool.
1four5 - Posted - 05/11/2011: 09:04:03
mayby it's required in a boat now... you know, a vest for every passenger...

Toby's a strong swimmer, but I put a life vest on him when we're out on the boat. And dog can get tired and if he fell overboard it makes him easier to see in waves and it has a handle on the back that makes it easier to get him back in the boat. He doesn't seem to mind it.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/11/2011: 11:09:26
On a boat I think it makes sense.
In a kiddie pool in your backyard not so much.
dat - Posted - 05/11/2011: 11:58:10
I guess it depends on where you are, I haven't ever been in any water that there were waves that big or where we weren't able to get to the dog quickly or easily, most of the time we're on the river or a slew that the dogs can get to the bank about as quick as we get turned around
1four5 - Posted - 05/11/2011: 11:58:31
Not a lot of boats in Kansas. Just corn and wheat.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/11/2011: 16:42:16
We had a 30' sailboat on the ocean. Sold that and now have a 20' powerboat on a river with strong currents and a pretty good tide - hence the life jacket on the dog unit.
1four5 - Posted - 05/11/2011: 17:29:20
Kansas has some lakes, mostly man-made dammed resivours. Pretty much mudholes.
OM45GE - Posted - 05/12/2011: 04:11:05
I've been there and can attest to that for sure Dean. We're blessed with a lot of water around here. It's part of what I love about New England. Whether it's canoeing, sailing, fishing water skiing or swimming, I love being on the water.
dat - Posted - 05/12/2011: 06:00:07
we finally got some rain last night, and it's still dry
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 05/12/2011: 08:07:14
I feel like we haven't gotten much rain this spring. I suspect we'll be in drought conditions this summer.
dat - Posted - 05/12/2011: 08:43:46
We have been in drought conditions all last winter and spring, we have had a burn ban since january
I believe the average rainfall around here is about 55 inches a year I think we've had less than 8 so far, we're in the D4 on this map

OM45GE - Posted - 05/12/2011: 10:00:53
That's not good. I'm reading a good book about water management (or the lack of it!). It's pretty alarming.
dat - Posted - 05/12/2011: 10:27:53
good thing is, we've only had to mow the yard 3 times so far this year, and didn't have to mow the whole thing then, normally we have to mow about once every week and a half to two weeks
flake - Posted - 05/12/2011: 12:02:13
The weedeater, which I didn't empty the fuel out of last fall, nor buy new gas or mix for, started on the fourth pull last week. The world may actually be coming to an end.
mike
dat - Posted - 05/12/2011: 12:32:30
is that the same weedeater you had out in the yard about 4 or 5 years ago with the grass grown up around it?, I'm still weedeating with the same Echo I had back then
1four5 - Posted - 05/12/2011: 12:39:23
My male greyhound pees on the weeds and kills them
dat - Posted - 05/12/2011: 12:52:28
our weeds are wishing that a dog would run through the yard and pee on them so they can have some relief
