I grew a beard once, a buddy of mine's daugter watched as it grew. she would always come running up to me when we went over to their house, she would crawl all over me, then one day I shaved the beard, it scared her silly. it took several months before she would come anywhere around me after I shaved

When my fire crew was up on the Divide, I had this red knit cap on and about a five day growth, and kept thinking I looked like Robert Conrad in Centennial. Except taller. And without the battery. The last time I let the beard go, the teenage daughter of a friend was fighting my wife tooth-and-nail over it.....she thought it was great....to a point. She said "Oh...it's stylish..all the cool retro-rockers look like that!!!!!" The DA&N beard was gone that night.
I ain't retro....you can't be retro if you never left in the first place.

Last weekend I crossed paths with a guy I used to work with at the Base. He walked right by. When I got his attention, he couldn't believe is was me. He was still clean cut.
OM45GE - Posted - 03/18/2011: 13:33:41
I was flattered when an attractive co-worker said she liked my beard. Then she said it reminded her of ther grandfather!
dat - Posted - 03/18/2011: 13:39:55
I'm getting to the grandfather phase, our oldest daughter turns 20 this weekend, i'm 41 and still feel like I should be 20
OM45GE - Posted - 03/18/2011: 13:49:37
Man, I've got 18 years on you - no grandkids and my son is only 10. But I feel the same way. I feel like I'm 20 inside, but my body doesn't agree.

My daughter has already been married and divorced once... and is currently engaged again. But she's to busy being a young professional to have babies. In this world, I'm not so sure that's a bad thing. The knee brace I put on every morning reminds me my joints are way past their prime.
OM45GE - Posted - 03/18/2011: 16:11:58
We share that too - I've been wearing a Townsend unloader brace for a couple of years now. It's been a life saver for me. I went from not being able to walk a block to walking four to six miles a day and skiing again.
1four5 - Posted - 03/18/2011: 16:20:24
You got me beat! I can barely jog a couple slow miles with my dogs. skiing...no way! A 3 hour gig standing with my banjo can really be a killer... but I've swore off complaining... so you didn't hear that...
OM45GE - Posted - 03/18/2011: 16:52:42
Hear what?
1four5 - Posted - 03/18/2011: 17:54:33
Nothing... all is well!
OM45GE - Posted - 03/19/2011: 05:52:48
That woke me from my nap...
1four5 - Posted - 03/19/2011: 07:17:31
Nothing like the smell of Ben-gay
OM45GE - Posted - 03/19/2011: 10:11:59
Doesn't this seem to be turning into a geezer thread?
1four5 - Posted - 03/19/2011: 16:42:52
Well, I wonder if all the AARP stuff I get in the mail has anything to do with that. I'm not 60 yet... but I keep getting stuff from them every week.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/19/2011: 19:16:04
I got a bunch of AARP stuff a few years back. I finally sent them a letter saying I was only 35 and perhaps they should save their postage until I was a little older.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/19/2011: 19:17:45
I'm in the airport in Vegas. I think they might actually let us board soon.
1four5 - Posted - 03/19/2011: 19:46:00
Put a nickle in the slots for me! I'll never forget going to Vegas... I won $41 in the airport.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/20/2011: 00:04:19
Now I'm in New Orleans. And very tired.
1four5 - Posted - 03/20/2011: 00:50:35
You traveled more in one day than I have in the last 4 years
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/20/2011: 12:59:55
I'm feeling a bit jetlagged.
1four5 - Posted - 03/20/2011: 13:16:22
Did you get body scanned?
OM45GE - Posted - 03/20/2011: 16:27:43
Air travel has become sooooo unpleasant.
1four5 - Posted - 03/20/2011: 18:22:08
And expensive
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/20/2011: 18:25:24
I am the mysterious woman who goes into an empty bar and orders a brandy, neat, drinks and leaves.
1four5 - Posted - 03/20/2011: 18:45:23
Next time, invite cute guy to be the mystery man
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/20/2011: 18:57:31
As far as I know, he's being mysterious in DC tonight.
1four5 - Posted - 03/20/2011: 19:35:53
Does this mystery have a happy ending?
OM45GE - Posted - 03/21/2011: 04:33:16
I once unintentionally (sort of) smuggled TWO knives on an international flight.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/21/2011: 05:13:39
I once forgot about the whole limited liquids thing and got searched because I packed my sunscreen in my carry on.
OM45GE - Posted - 03/21/2011: 05:19:20
First of all, I used to travel on business a lot. I have a Laguiole pocket knife that I’ve carried for years and which has great sentimental value. I always pack it in my checked bags. I also have a Swiss Army Knife that is attached to my home key ring and that I usually leave in my car when I park.
One time I was going to Switzerland and was standing in line waiting to have my briefcase X-Rayed and to go through the metal detector. I reached into my pocket and felt the Laguiole knife. I stuck it into my briefcase under a tin of Altoid mints and figured I would plead ignorance if they found it. The bag sailed through the metal detector and I carried it onto the plane.
When I got to my hotel in Switzerland, I went to get my Laguiole knife out of the briefcase and found the Swiss Army Knife on the key ring. I must have tossed it in and they never saw either one. It didn’t make me feel very good about our screeners’ ability to catch someone with evil intent.
dat - Posted - 03/21/2011: 05:59:59
you never know when somebody may have one of those deadly rubber bands or paper clips on a plane
OM45GE - Posted - 03/21/2011: 06:39:20
Or that explosive shampoo!
dat - Posted - 03/21/2011: 07:14:45
or that lipstick, ya'll know how dangerous that can be
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/21/2011: 07:14:48
Or horse shoes. I read somewhere that someone had had horse shoes confiscated. And there are tons of knitting forums out there with advice on flying with knitting needles.
In case anyone was wondering, a pencil is about the same size as a number 10 needle and much less likely to be confiscated by TSA.

how was N'oleans? didn't get mugged or shot at? nobody tried to sell you any drugs?
1four5 - Posted - 03/21/2011: 08:22:11
I got mad when they took my lighter...
OM45GE - Posted - 03/21/2011: 09:14:28
I sure wouldn't want to be the one who had to ensure airline safety, but some of what they do doesn't make sense to me.

I'm sitting outside enjoying the sun and expecting to get mugged any second now.
dat - Posted - 03/21/2011: 10:16:13
what's a trip down there without getting mugged, it would be kinda like going to Las Vegas and not gambling, or going to Branson and not going to a music show, or going to Washing DC and not driving by the white house
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/21/2011: 11:22:31
Well I was in Vegas the other day and didn't gamble and I live in DC and don't think I've ever gone by the White house. So maybe I can avoid getting mugged while I'm here.
1four5 - Posted - 03/21/2011: 11:27:34
I never go by the White house when I visit my Daughter in DC, I always go straight to the Smithsonian. I like the art museum too. All them underground trains are cool too.
dat - Posted - 03/21/2011: 11:55:53
I would like to go to the Smithsonian, I don't even know how many different parts there are to it, but I could spend a lot of time looking
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/21/2011: 12:56:19
I'm spoiled by the Smithsonian. You know there are other museums where you have to pay?
dat - Posted - 03/21/2011: 13:59:12
I think I've had to pay to go into every museum I've been in
1four5 - Posted - 03/21/2011: 14:13:22
Looks like I might go again soon... my crazy baby girl is getting married... again. No date yet, but she said maybe this fall. I'll plan an extra day... just so I can go to the Smithsonian again...
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/21/2011: 18:36:37
Some people seem to be able to get married more than once. Me? I can barely manage to find someone willing to date me for a few months.
OM45GE - Posted - 03/22/2011: 04:04:48
We've got a bunch of great museums here in Boston and they all charge admission.
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 03/22/2011: 05:27:55
Just have to say I hate those feather topper thingies. Slept on the floor last night. This morning I asked if they could just take them dang thing out of the room.
dat - Posted - 03/22/2011: 05:40:48
