Is anyone familiar with this make?
I have been given an old banjo with the name checkmate on the peghead.
The banjo is very light and has guitar style tuning pegs.
Also very narrow neck.
I will try to post some pictures

Also, there is a receipt in the case from Bob Wilcutt dated 1980 for some finger picks. 40 cents each.

Bob Wilcutt is based out of Lexington KY. I believe Checkmate was an Asian brand name.

'Checkmate' is listed on the Hawthorn site as being entry level Asian.

And that's exactly what it is.

I have one a friend bought for me for $10 when he spotted it at a yard sale.
It had a cheap aluminum decal on the headstock on which I ground the 'c' and the 'mate off of, leaving the word 'heck' and dubbed it the Heck-Tone.
I did it 'cause everyone kept asking... "what the heck is that!"
