Happy new year from Kansas I slept right through it
JackJack - Posted - 01/01/2011: 11:27:25
Happy New Year!
I actually stayed awake this time... for about 3 minutes past the final hour.

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 01/02/2011: 12:29:12
Happy New Year! I'm back in Maryland. And tired.
1four5 - Posted - 01/02/2011: 13:38:58
Did you bring the cowboy back with you?
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 01/02/2011: 16:13:53
I left the cowboy in Indiana ten years ago. We still stay in touch, but I knew then that the gay thing would always be between us. Still love him, though.

Did anyone make any resolutions? I didn't this year because I'm all out of vices
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 01/03/2011: 05:45:12
I made a resolution not to make resolutions I wouldn't keep.
dat - Posted - 01/03/2011: 05:48:18
Mornin Ya'll, no resolutions here
1four5 - Posted - 01/03/2011: 08:02:41
I thought about resolving to work out more, but the thought tired me out.
dat - Posted - 01/03/2011: 08:44:07
I just cams across some brazilian rosewood boards, I resolve to make something with it besides firewood

Sounds sexy!
dat - Posted - 01/03/2011: 14:14:31
I have enough that I can ruin about 3 six foot long 1 3/4 by 6's trying to make a new bridge fer my banjer, I tried out of teh purpleheart wood and it didn't sound to pretty good.
I'll probably end up making a few jewelry / what not boxes,
I'ld like to make my own banjo one day, if the boards were thicker I'ld try an all rosewood banjo, but I'ld hate to ruin the wood trying
1four5 - Posted - 01/03/2011: 15:12:53
Make a nice wall hanger for your banjos
dat - Posted - 01/04/2011: 07:48:04
I made some stands out of red oak for that
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 01/04/2011: 09:49:54
I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to different types of wood.

I just bought a new wheel for my spinning wheel. I'm going to have to stain it to match. I'm not looking forward to that. I'm not real good at that sort of thing.
Actually, you might be able to tell me this: I used minwax finishing paste (I think) over the stain on the original wheel. It's not real shiny but there's definitely a coat of something over the stain. Is it possible to darken the original stain? I don't recall what color I used for it, but I don't think it's made anymore. I bought something similar that I've used on my double treadle and the tensioned lazy kate but it's a shade or two darker than the original stain so my wheel is now with bits and pieces in different colors. I thought if I was judicious with a little more stain maybe I could get it closer to matching. But with the coating on top I'm not sure if I can to that.
dat - Posted - 01/04/2011: 10:33:33
you can darken it some, since you used minwax before, you can go over it with the minwax polyshades, which has a stain and polyurethane finish togeather. they have many shades of it, finish matching can be a headache, but sometimes you get lucky and don't have to blend many shades. it is a lot easier to darken than to try to lighten
find a spot you really won't notice, lightly sand then recoat, then see what it looks like,

Mr. Quimby - Posted - 01/04/2011: 11:39:29
Thanks.
If I'm going to restain I might as well take the whole thing apart and I can test on the inside of one of the supports probably.
I guess I better see if I have sand paper readily available or if I need to get some more.
dat - Posted - 01/04/2011: 11:46:40
I went by at lunch and bought some 1500 grit sandpaper, I was looking for some 3000, but they were out of thar and the 2000, the 3000 polishes great, it'll make the purpleheart and rosewood both shine like a mirrir with out any polish
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 01/04/2011: 12:50:14
I admire your patience in doing that sort of thing. I usually get bored and cut corners.
Obviously wood work is not in my future as a second career.
dat - Posted - 01/04/2011: 13:33:35
I've been sanding on a purpleheart wood ring for my bride, right now I've sanded with 2500, it has a shine but not as much as it would with 3000, I'll probably let her have it this evening when I get home then polish it up later
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 01/04/2011: 13:52:07
Take a picture. I'd love to see that.
dat - Posted - 01/04/2011: 13:53:13
I can take a picture, but I don't know how to get it on the computer
dat - Posted - 01/04/2011: 15:16:08
I have seen the digital cameras and walgreens that have a computer cable with them, I believe they are cheap enough that I may invest 8 or 9 dollars in one
1four5 - Posted - 01/04/2011: 16:08:00
Take the picture with your cell phone, e-mail it to yourself, then put it on the gallery here.
dat - Posted - 01/05/2011: 05:57:25
well, I don't have a cell phone, I still like to get away from people
Mr. Quimby - Posted - 01/05/2011: 06:21:14
It's okay. We still love you.
1four5 - Posted - 01/05/2011: 07:48:44
Have a freind with a cell phone take the picture. If the friend is single, have him take a picture of himself and send it to....

I can't think of anybody I know that is single, even the divorced ones are either married again or close to it

I just opened my bottle that I had at home the other day. I've been neglecting it for brandy.
dat - Posted - 01/06/2011: 09:02:06
I bought a bottle of brandy about 12 or 13 years ago while I was in Mexico, I haven't opened it yet though, I drank everything else I bought down there pretty quick but left the brandy alone for some reason, probably just 'cause it was in a nice bottle
