Hi everyone. I am thinking about buying a Blackjack off a fellow hangout member (name undisclosed). Can anyone tell me what I should look for to ensure authenticity? Especially in the tonering?
This is a major purchase and any help would be appreciated.

Since the Blackjack is a rather recent model I don't think that anyone would be producing a copy of one in order to fool anyone or take advantage in a fraudulent manner. Also you can ask for the serial number and check it out. One last thing is to ask for references on the seller if he has a history of selling items to fellow BHO members. FWIW, from most of the comments you see from other BHO members its pretty rare to do business through this site and get ripped. As to the tonering simply ask the seller if he knows which ring it is or has any knowledge of it being changed at any point.

This is the link to the Gibson page which lists all the specs and pictures. With regards to the "RB-75" or "Crowe" tone ring, I have one and the only identifying marks are the Gibson script and a 4 digit serial number all stamped into the ring on the bottom inside lip by the neck lag screw hole.

There should also be a serial number stamped inside the wood rim with a Gibson Nashville warranty label.

Best of luck to you!!! It's a gorgeous banjo.

If I were buying a banjo off the BHO, I'd lean towards a member who has history with the hangout. You can check their profile which shows the date it was created. I would exercise care entering a transaction whose profile was created yesterday. This is not to say recent members are less than honorable, just that I'd exercise caution with any transaction. Just my spin.

Thanks so much for all of your help guys. The guy had the banjo on ebay, and he has 100% positive feedback. We have been talking and I think he is a pretty staright arrow. Thanks so much.

Those Yates are sweet banjos for sure. I am friends with the brother of Donnie Little who has his own signature model with Yates.

If you are looking for a crisp, clear, growling sound the Blackjack is the ticket. If you are looking for thumpy, dumpy get a Yates.

IMHO the Crowe tone ring is the best tone ring Gibson has put in a banjo for a long time. I'm sure it was before Ron got his Yates but I'v seen Ron picking a Blackjack. Actually if you can see the Americas Bluegrass TV shows Ron was picking a Blackjack on that TV show also.
