I remember the first time I saw the Cockman Family... it was many years ago at Lackey's Store in Hiddenite, NC. The store building was located on the Lackey family farm. It was run by Walter Lackey, open on Friday nights ,and had live bluegrass music. The bands played on a make-shift stage, the audience sit on old movie theatre seats, and old artifacts adorned the walls. The "facilities" consisted of an outhouse, out back ,behind the store... had to take a flash light with you! Once-in-a-while, you could catch a glimpse of Walter nipping the bottle out back! Billy was so small back then that his banjo was bigger than he was! Congratulations, Billy!

I was at Renofest and it was a WONDERFUL time-Billy played 2 songs as a finalist-I forget the first one, but the second tune was Alison Brown's "Leaving Cottondale", one of my favorite all-time banjo tunes. There was some serious competition, but when Billy played, I knew he had won, even before the judging was finished. Ronnie Reno said Renofest is now considered the 3rd best fiddle/banjo contest/festival on the east coast, and I think he's right. I'll be back next year! To include the competition along with a first rate professional bluegrass show featuring Lost and Found, Ronnie Reno and Reno Tradition and The Grascals made it alot of fun for everyone. And the price for all 3 days? Only $35. A real BARGAIN.

It has been a privilege and an honor to be a part of Reno Fest. I appreciate you Terry for helping keep the bluegrass banjo tradition alive in your partnership with the Deering company. Thanks to all, I hope to be part of Reno Fest in the coming future. Billy Cockman.

Congratulations! That boy must be some picker. The Deering Baucom model is a Hoss. I enjoy mine everytime I pick it up.

That does it, I now know what my first "good" banjo will be. Thanks to all that have made and promoted this model banjo. Sincerely, Don Flowers, Lutz, Fl.

Renofest is something I really want to see. I don't play a lot of reno stuff (3 or 4 tunes) but really dig that style. One of these days I'd like to get there.
