Hope Arnie doesn't mind if I post the video he mentioned.

Arnie playing Old Joe Clark on a Rickard banjo.

Terry,

I'm in the same boat as you as far as trying to find an openback in the 500-800 price range. I've been playing the lowest end Rover for 7 years so I feel like I've earned an upgrade.

I would echo the recommendations to find a store with a good variety of banjos that you can actually touch and feel and hear for yourself (though I can say from first hand experience how difficult that can actually be). For every person who says one thing about a given banjo, you're certain to find at least one person who'll say the opposite. It's going to be your banjo so the most important thing is how you feel about it.

If you want to try and pick up a used Reiter or Tradesman in that range you've gotta be fast. I've seen them here and there but I've been trying grab one for the last 7 months, it seems like if you don't snatch it up within an hour or so listing you're out of luck.

I think there are a couple of Enochs in the classifieds too.
One for $800, one for $825.

Yep, there are two fretted Tradesmen in the classifieds, as RD says.
