Bill, you and AL are doing a great job up there. I can't wait to get my tubaphone from you.
Will1717 - Posted - 12/06/2009: 20:15:00
Ed: Your tubaphone is going together with the batch of banjos we're presently working on and should be completed by Christmas or earlier. I'll keep you posted.

I assembled the pot tonight. Starting to look like a banjo again! (I stained the skin head with coffee.) Here's a picture.

Installing the skin head was more difficult than I thought it would be! I tacked a skin head to a gourd before (that was easy.) Feeding the skin head around the flesh hoop and inside the tension hoop, pulling out all the wrinkles, and tightening it down just right was challenging.
The kit is almost complete. I'm hoping to have it playable by the weekend.

Pete:
Was the head fairly tight when you left it to dry? It looks pretty loose to me and the tension hoop may end up being too low when tightened. I usually (with lots of help and several additional hands) snug up the skin so all the wringles disappear and the tension hoop is sitting fairly high. Let it dry for a couple of days and then tension down the head. I may be wrong but that head looks real loose.

I was out of town for a few days which was a great time to let the head dry. It felt tight enough to me, but I had to string her up to make sure. Here she is:
She sounds good. Very little to no head sag so I think it's good!
I'll take her apart again to trim the head and I still want to put that ebony nut and pip in. I'll post a video or two and better pictures soon.

Does anyone know whats going on with these kits? Bill's website looks the same as it has for awhile now. Thought maybe there would be some info on there by now? Do you just get ahold of Bill directly to order your kit? Thanks!
Will1717 - Posted - 01/12/2010: 21:35:04
Banjolution:
Just haven't had time to do any modifications on the web site. Basically the kits are ready to go and I've delivered approx. 5 kits todate. Each kit has been different from the other kits as per customer requests. If anyone is interested in ordering a kit you just have to drop me an e-mail and let me know if your wanting: an 11" or 12" rim size kit, fretless or fretted; how basic or completed your looking for; raw brass hardware, nickel plated or antiqued brass hardware etc. Once you contact me and I get a feel for what direction you wish to go I can e-mail back a price breakdown from the basic do it all yourself kit or partially built kit. From there you just pick from the menu. The intention was to supply a custom designed kit for each customer requirement, but I finding out as more kits are being sold that it may be more practical to offer say a stage 1, stage 2. or stage 3 kit. This may make ordering much simpler and less confussing to potential customers.
Again, just drop me an e-mail to wrickard@gccl.com if your interested in learning more or placing an order.

EDIT - Bill and I ended up posting at the same time, so now this is old news... Bill's pretty busy right now, but I contacted him directly a bit over a week ago and am buying a Dobson kit from him. He has two different rim size options, 11" and 12", and a few neck and fingerboard options. He is definitely selling them. Email him and he will send you info about the kit and some of the options as well as some photos. He and I both hope that my kit will ship sometime this week. It took a few days for him to get back to me the first time, but I had a great phone conversation with him last weekend so we could finalize kit options and get all my questions answered. He also has cases for his banjos. Took me several days to realize that new kit = new banjo = I need a case for it. Sometimes I'm a bit slow... Contacting him directly seems to work best at wrickard@gccl.com

Scott: Your kit should be shipped by Thursday at the latest. I just finished antiquing the Gotoh tuners and hardware today. Just needs to go in a box! (Blue or green coloured gig bag??)

Thanks to all for the nice comments on the kit. I'm really enjoying this banjo and have been playing it everyday.
I sure would like to see pictures, movies, and sound-clips of other Rickard kits as they are being assembled. Maybe we need some kind of secret Rickard Kit banjo society!
I had a great conversation with Bill over the weekend. Spun-over rims....hmmm.

I'd be all for that, but then if I reply here it probably wouldn't be so secret Maybe we can work out an identifying handshake or musical pass-tune for members. I'm looking forward to receiving mine. Not sure how I'm going to stain the rim, and I'm contemplating various inlay options, but will stick with the simple-is-better philosophy. Mine's gonna have frets and a 12" Renaissance head... Anyone else out there ready to joint this secret society? Should be a few others at least...

I'm not getting a kit, but Bill is putting a finished fretted 'jo together for me. I'll probably install a Bill Miller pre-mounted skin head when I get it (soon I hope So do I get to join? ~John
