I have a Slingerland tenor neck that is worn but still a good neck and after looking at it to see if it was worth replacing the tuners, I decided that it was. Problem now is that although it looks simple enough (old friction pegs, ivory) It looks like I was wrong. I am sure that these can be removed and replaced, but after taking one screw loose my thoughts on that were stopped. Actually, I didn't want to damage anything and quit to ask this question.
Looked in the archive but didn't see anything there. If you have suggestions as to the process, i'll be in your debt.
Any help is appreciated.

Shady, I am a little confused as to your question. Slingerland banjos to my knowledge don't have ivory pegs (violin type?). They have friction style metal with bone/ivory buttons. These are very easy to disassemble and remove. The whole peg is held together via the screw through the button. Once that is removed, the button and collar can be pulled off and the post can be pulled through the top side of the peghead. However, some friction tuners can stick and bind on the post over time. This requires a bit of effort to remove them. Don't use any tools to grip the button as it may chip or shatter. Just use your hands. I have experience old tuners that were a B**** to remove.

Sometimes the ivoroid buttons on those things won't come off without breaking them. They're not that valuable and, unless it's a higher line model, neither is the banjo - so trying to preserve the tuners when you remove them might not be worth the effort.
Once they're off, however, you're going to have to ream out the holes to accept the larger diameter shafts of the replacement tuners. I'm assuming you're planning on installing geared tuners?

Thank you both for your input. I should have not implied Ivory as the peg material, I do know better.
As far as the use of the pegs, I don't intend doing anything with them and any new geared tuners may be sometime down the road since I'm really not satisfied that I'll use the neck at all. It is in decent condition and might make a nice little tenor but again that is down the road. I'll first have to really look the neck over and see if it is worth the effort and expense of putting a new pot on it as well. I was mainly interested to see if as you said the screw held the two pieces of the tuner together or if there was some other mystical means connecting them.
Thanks for your input.
