just thought I'd send you a little update. I was working in my woodshop this past Wednesday and cut one of my fingers off. It was my pinky finger at the 2nd knuckle on my left hand. I also clipped the end of my ring finger and the end of my thumb. This will probably end my banjo picking for the most part. If it had been my right hand it wouldn't have had much effect on my picking. I thank God it wasn't any worse, it could easily have been my whole hand.

sounds Like Mr. Revis Martin could use some prayers for his hand.

probably for his eyes too so he can see where his hand is next time.

sorry 'bout that last part, I just had to type it

I am so sorry to hear of your misfortune Revis, I will keep you in my prayers

BConk - Posted - 11/20/2009:  13:27:10

OUCH - that's gotta hurt...especially when it means no more banjo playing!

Wow. Prayers sent.

Sorry to hear that.Hoping for the best,Revis.

Please tell Revis I'm sorry for his misfortune, but not to give up on the idea of playing too soon. It may prove possible.

Tell Revis I'm sorry to hear about this and I wish him well.

And tell him not to give up on his banjo playing, as he might want to try playing lefty.

Where there is a will, there's a way.

Nosferatu - Posted - 11/20/2009:  14:05:37

Very sorry the hear the news...

Let Revis know that Ronnie, our BHO Moderator, is missing the end of his little finger and he hasn't stopped playing. He needs to let it heal and jump right back in there!

Let me add: My dad had the end of his middle-finger bit off by a chimp, he still plays guitar with the best of them.

Thank you,
"Count" Hugh

I figured out how to make chord shapes and whatever without using my left pinky until it healed. I can fret pretty good with the stump now. Don't let that stop you.

A friend of mine severed ALL the fingers of his left hand with a band saw (at the second joint). He is still playing his guitar.

Think Barry Abernathy!!

Praying for your healing, Revis. And as Dennis said, you might try playing banjo lefty. Works for me.

steve davis - Posted - 11/20/2009:  14:39:49

An old friend of mine is missing his left hand ring finger and plays real good guitar.

dbaty - Posted - 11/20/2009:  15:01:01

So sorry to hear that. Don't let that stop your pickin.

jbanjoist - Posted - 11/20/2009:  15:12:46

Tell Reevis there's guys playing and playing well with a lot less finger than that.

I know he can do it in time.

I'll second that. In the mean time (and healing time) I hope he keeps a song in his heart.

Texasbanjo - Posted - 11/20/2009:  15:47:35

Our thoughts and prayers are with Revis during his healing. I'm with everyone else - don't quit, you can find a way to continue picking if you want to. My son has the index finger on his right finger gone and he plays guitar -- can't make barre chords, but can do pretty good using partial chords and can still flatpick up a storm.

El Dobro - Posted - 11/20/2009:  16:09:20

Emory Martin used to play the 5-string with Johnnie & Jack and had only one arm. Get better Revis.

Glenn Tate - Posted - 11/20/2009:  16:31:00

What about Barry Abernathy with Mountain Heart. He was born with a deformity of his left hand, and has no fingers. He only a thumb and several partial digits. He uses his thumb and the knuckles of his partial fingers to fret the notes, and still plays bluegrass style banjo in a professional bluegrass band.

Ronnie - Posted - 11/20/2009:  17:30:44

Barry Abernathy is awesome! I still have some of my fingers left and I wish I could play like that!

banjostan - Posted - 11/20/2009:  18:59:15

Sure am sorry to hear about the accident. I can't help but think about how easy it is to make a little mistake with great consequences because those power tools cut bone and flesh just as fast as it will cut wood. Hope your pain isn't to bad and you heal fast. Like all have said learn to improvise and continue doing what you enjoy doing. And be real careful not to get infections. Best of wishes.

Well folks, I couldn't sit here readin this stuff any longer without saying something. What a great bunch of people you are. With all this encouragement I'm bound to make it through this okay. After the accident I came to the house and tried to contact my wife, she had gone to sit with her sister who is in bad health. Well I couldn't get in touch with her so I locked up the house and drove 18 miles to the Cookeville hospital. By the time I got there I was hurting bad. I arrived at the emergency room and when the receptionist saw what I needed they whirled me back in a room and started working on me. It just so happened that one of the best surgeons at the hospital was on duty so they got me all sewed up. Now I'm sitting here helpless and hurting. I am truly grateful for all the emails you all have sent, you don't know what it means to me, thank you so much. All you that emailed me have said you wanted me back on, so here I am. I will try to be a good boy if you will take me back.

Revis, think of Django Reinhardt, the great Gypsy jazz guitarist. He was missing several fingers.

It's good to see you back Revis. I hope your recovery is speedy and without complications. I bet you'll adapt just fine. It didn't stop Jerry Garcia.

What awful news! I'm sorry to hear of your shop accident and resultant injury. That kind of thing is a nightmare for each of us. I wish you a speedy recovery. If, as you noted, this ends your banjo picking, you might consider switching to Dobro - you've already got the right hand picking for it . . .

beeliner - Posted - 11/21/2009:  05:14:12

Thanks a bunch, all of you !

I am sure you be playing your banjo again soon. Just get well and don't worry about it.

Since your exile was self-imposed you hardly need anybody's permission to come back ....especially considering your lack of several fingertips doesn't seem to have effected your typing

I know if I'd lost some fingertips my typing would have a lot more @#$%$#@!!!! $%$#@@!!!! ^&%$#!!!!!! in it - for more reasons than one

Just remember, healing takes time. I'm glad to see you back and posting. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts.

Revis:

Words simply cannot convey the feelings and concern I have for your misfortune. I truly hope you will heal quickly and that the accident does not end your playing days. You have the main tool you need, which is your mind, with the help of the one you look to in times of distress, It is my hope you will find your way in music as well as in this, and the next life.

Revis:

I put my left hand through a table saw blade back in 1996. Fortunately, I did not cut off any fingers, but I had about half the left thumb pad removed, and a two severed tendon's on the left thumb and index finger. The surgeon put everything back as well as he could. After it healed, he gave me some hand exercises to do, and told me if I wanted to play again, I would have to do them until it hurt. I did the exercises, and started playing again. Slowly at first, but it wasn't long until I was as good as new.

Hang in there; you will make a great comeback.

Glad you're back.
I don't know about the generosity of people in your home town, but in Milwaukee, total strangers, just passing each other on the road, are more than happy to offer each other a finger.

And, like many previous posts have said: One does not need all ten fingers to play banjo well enough to really enjoy sharing banjo music.

Glad to see your back Reavis. I'm also sorry to hear about your loss. I'm not sure at all that it was just you that got you to the hospital and I think your in good hands now. When you have healed things will look different. In the mean time my prayers go up for you.

Bill Rogers - Posted - 11/21/2009:  23:52:11

My best wishes to you Revis. Don't despair, but plan to return to playing banjo. All are familiar with Barry Abernathy, but many outside of California don't know that Vern Williams, the late, legendary singer and mandolin player, lost one of his left long fingers (I'm unsure which) to a joiner. He successfully resumed playing on an instrument notable for the constant use of four-string chords. I trust that you'll do the same down the line.

Revis--I had an unfortunate encounter with the innards of a baler last winter and shredded my left index finger. Now, 11 months later, it doesn't flex and is about as useful as a stick when it comes to playing. In hindsight I probably should have gone to the ER right after it happened instead of "cowboy-up". I've taken up playing the dobro and lap steel in the months since then, but I tell you that it's just not the same, not for me, anyway.

I'm glad to hear that you're healing and are in the care of a good surgeon--my thoughts are with you.

Chris

Best wishes for healing up Revis. Like everyone says...let it heal really well before returning to full out playing. Maybe a bit of time with an Occupational Therapist would be a good investment for exercises, etc.
