He is on vacation...
snakeherd - Posted - 11/20/2009: 11:41:40
He was involved in a 'heated' discussion and caught some negative attention. I believe that he's p'd off and keeping away until he feels like coming back.

I think he's BANJOKID1...solely to antagonize Grich.

If this is the case, he would be yet another asset to this website that was chased off. scott

I noticed that when Cliff Fitch disappears, Greg Rich reappears. Did anyone else notice that the names also rhyme?

Cliff painted himself into a corner, got mad, took all his marbles and went home. He was in no way chased off. He even erased all his posts to cover his tracks. Why do that?

I did say "if" that is the case. I did not read that thread. I was not necessarily trying to defend Cliff, I was just making a broad statement that another knowlegable and talented person has left this site.
No one on this forum will ever agree with everyone or anyone 100% of the time. We, myself included, tend to be too passionate about what we believe. Sometimes we should back off and agree to disagree. When we don't, someone leaves or gets their account locked or the thread gets locked and someone always get po'ed.
I have been reading this forum for about two years and posting for about one and a half. There dosen't seem to be many of the same people on here now as when I first started.

I'm probably better off staying away from this post altogether, but I feel that this is a good of a place to address some things as any.
It seems that I am being pinned as the cause for Cliff's leaving the forum. I did not cause Cliff to leave. Cliff left under his own will. The heat he took on the post in reference was due to his own selection of words, not mine.
Now, because I engaged in a hot debate with Cliff, I am somehow being looked at by some as Cliff's arch enemy and vise versa. People tend to point out to me when they've made jabs at him, often out of the line remarks, or are patting me on the back for 'getting rid of him'. Look... I did not want him to leave. I made 2 different attempts to take our issues off the board, but Cliff made it obvious that he didn't want to handle it that way. Again, I DID NOT WANT HIM TO LEAVE. Whether I like him or not, there are people on here who get a lot from his posts and enjoy his company.
So... will people look at me differently from this? Who knows? Will Cliff read this and come back? Probably not, but if he does I'd be glad that he was back on. At least we could get some fresh cartoons out of the deal.
DJMorgan - Posted - 11/20/2009: 21:37:48
Cliff ordered up some more Burlile tone rings so he's busy building banjos.
JCushman - Posted - 11/21/2009: 06:38:35

Cliff, did you ever repair that natural gas leak in your shop?
Retropicker - Posted - 11/21/2009: 07:44:49
Cliff is about a 50 yo man. The only person that can make hime do anything here is Eric. Eventually Cliff will stop holding his breath with his arms tightly folded. There's a cartoon for ya.

Cliff started another business which is not banjo related, because the global economic climate has made banjo manufacture less profitable. His work involves much travelling away from home. I don't know how many banjos Cliff made but there were not that many which means that they could in the future be worth a bit. Everyone who has bought a Fitch banjo including myself have been very pleased with their purchase. Maybe if he is home for Christmas he will let us know on BHO what is happening. We all miss him, lets hope he gets in touch with us. I would like to know how many he actually made. My guess is that it is less than 50. Incidentally, I am the only person in the UK who has a Fitch banjo.
goldtopia - Posted - 11/22/2009: 09:07:12
I don't know what he calls the name of his business. He told me its mortuary transport. He had a lot do do with funerals, embalming, etc. in the past before he started building banjos. He also qualified for it by taking courses. I guess the it involves travelling between states in a specially built refrigerated vehicle.
Frebazak - Posted - 11/22/2009: 10:18:45
Okay,... so is Cliff out of the banjo building business? That would be a pity. I thought he made some great banjos.......

I wish Cliff well. He can use the following: I have bad news and worse. Your dear has departed. The worse news? I brought a banjo.

Nobody made him leave, it was his decision. Like someone said, he picked up his marbles and left. As far as I can tell he didn't even say goodbye, thank you, or even kiss my foot. I've sent him an email, asking him if he can do some work on a banjo, to which he has not responded. I just say Good Riddance, I'll just spend my two to three hundred dollars somewhere else.
goldtopia - Posted - 11/24/2009: 00:31:25
Cliff did not tell me that he is out of the banjo business altogether. It is likely he still has his banjo workshop which would enable him to make the occasional banjo, if he so wished. Its not an easy thing to give up, particularly as he became one of Americas best banjo producers. As for not saying goodbye, it was probably not expected in this way. At first he cut down on his work by not taking on any more banjo maintenance work, to give more time to his new business, just making occasional banjos. But that had to stop too as the business suddenly took off leaving him no time for banjo manufacture. It is not known if he will make banjos again. I recon if someone really wants a Fitch banjo he would make one for you, but you would have to wait for it.

Hmm. I didn't know they said "reckon" over there in the UK.
goldtopia - Posted - 11/24/2009: 23:37:39
Yes. The word reckon is originally an English word, like when judges do their reckoning at the end of a trial. Apart from that. Does anyone know how many Fitch Banjos were made ?.
rjanecek - Posted - 11/25/2009: 07:11:37
I recall a thread a while back when Cliff addressed that. Maybe 6 months ago? I thought he mentioned something in the 40's..

Jason, Why exactly does it matter to you? I'm sure he has good reasons for doing whatever he's doing. He did work related to this before becoming a fulltime banjo builder. He does superb banjo work. He's an honest guy who stands by his work. I prefer my Fitch banjo to Stellings, a Prucha, an OME, a Goldstar and a Deering that I've owned. If you want to order a banjo, contact him. The rest is just gossip and attempts at character assassination by people with bad intent.

on a serious note with no negative words toward cliff, whats gonna happen to the folks who own a fitch banjo that needs work? If he doesnt even have time to do simple repair work due to his new job taking off, how will the necessary repairs get done. I'm sure he will make time if needed. I just think that if I bought a several thousand dollar "custom" banjo if something needed to be done, I would hope my builder was still in business to do so. Im not talking about simple stuff that any luthier can do. Im talking about issues that should be covered under "warranty" so to speak. I dont know maybe it will never be an issue.
jason holgate - Posted - 11/28/2009: 13:12:22
why exactly does it matter to me that sounds a little adrasive sir with all do respect did you read my post with all joking around aside i wrote he DOES GOOD WORK AND I THAT MEANS ME CANNOT FIGUIRE WHY A PROFESSIONAL LUTHIER BANJO BUILDERCANT MAKE IT I THINK IT IS A SHAME THERE WAS NO DISRESPECT OR ATTEMPTS ON ANYONES CHARACTER BY ME SO THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE YOU SAY HE IS HONEST WHERE DID I SAY HE WASNT I AM SURE HE HAS GOOD REASON FOR LEAVING AND DOING OTHER WORK MY POINT IS AND WAS THAT IT IS A SHAME SOMEONE WHO DOES GOOD WORK CANT MAKE IT OR CHOOSES NOT TOO AS THIS IS A LOSS TO EVERYONE NOW THANK YOU FOR QUESTIONING MY MOTIVES AND CHARACTER ..........................
rjanecek - Posted - 11/28/2009: 13:18:43
Cliff clearly advised everyone well before he left he would continue to honor all repair or warranty work for his customers. He stated he will also be interested in building banjos for customers on a time to time basis.
He has a website that Im sure you will be able to contact him if you should be interested in his work. May even have a phone number to boot!!
He is not here to address these concerns, I suggest giving him a call.. I doubt he will be leaving his customers between a rock and a hard place with warranty work...

He will answer emails, at least he did mine the other night, in less than ten minutes. He is still building and will still have banjos for sale, if anyone has a warranty issue I am sure he would take care of it. Like many he is trying to make a living. Page: 1  2
