I have a very comfortable Levy sheepskin padded strap. It fastens around two hooks in two places-laces up. I like to case my instruments after playing-how do you folks stuff a substantial strap in there? Is there a commonly used swivel snap and ring or other disconnect system you have found? I need the wide pad and would go nuts untying and re-tying the strap under the hooks-and would prefer a system that doesn't have a high risk of marring the instrument-"chicago screws" are as frustrating as the threading etc. Thanks, Ol'Lefty

I use a Blue Note strap that has heavy duty plastic(ABS?) clips that fasten onto loops I tied in 1/8 inch nylon twine that is the"cradle" around the lower half of the pot and stays there.I weave it in and out of the hooks and it doesn't touch the tonering. The BlueNote clips on and off in seconds.I stow it in the string compartment when not in use.The Blue Note strap is based on a 2 inch lifting strap with a 3inch shoulder pad. Very functional and comfortable.

I've been using this strap for 5 years. I just unhook the end near my left hand and lay the strap across the neck of the banjo flat. I have a TKL case. fits right in. If you had a Carlton case it would fit even better I think.

When I need a detachable, I use one of the two-part keyrings, similar to this.
It's noticeably cheaper than the music store item that does the same thing.
One of my friends did a twine macrame sort of thing on one, to help prevent any metal to instrument contact.

If there's an Eastern Mountain Sports or similar nearby, you can get yourself a Fastex or similar buckle. You can also order them online.
Here's just one link where you can buy them (don't know anything about the company): http://www.gleasoncamping.com/faste...webbing.aspx
Just cut your strap where you want the disconnect to be, thread through and secure with Chicago screws. I wrapped the screw heads with black electrical tape so they wouldn't scuff the banjo.

Don't you go calling my pal a screw head!

As Kirbonite suggests, the Neotech straps easily detach from either end and can be laid over the top of the banjo. They are also the most comfortable straps out there and reduce the apparent weight of the banjo. I have two. Just be for warned that they come in two lengths and the long strap is REALLY long. I accidentally ordered the long one and had to shorten it to use it.

Just follow up. I have the long strap.. I am 6 "1"
However; I thread it through several brackets, more like a cradle strap.. because the fastener has a big loop atatched to it. Threading multiple brackets just seemed more secure . If you just want to connect it to one bracket like the levy strap then by all means; Get the small one.

I have one of the Jack Hatfield Anit- Gravity straps and it detaches. It is a very nice strap and ou can buy extra ends to be able to transfer onto different banjos. I am not a fan of the sheepskin but I just trimmed it shorter.

Follow-Up---I got some good quality separating key rings-they work well. To protect the binding on the resonator where they want to collide, I got some sterling silver jeweler's sheet and with double stick tape made some fold-over "protectors" for the contact points on the reso rim. Looks good-old time deluxe- and handy too. Ol Lefty

I use a similar set up with ABS clips. I've attached the clips using strips of buckskin that are sewn in a flat loop instead of the nylon cord/straps. I can detach my big boy strap, which fits in the compartment under the neck in the case, and the buckskin strps and clips fit nicely around the pot with no worries about having to cram things in the case. ~S
