Had a thought about an alert system similar to that of facebook. When a member replies to a thread you created or replied too, it pops up a notification at the bottom of the browser in a dynamic list. Anyone think this would be handy?

No; it would only clutter up my browser since I post quite a bit. There are more than adequate tools available within Banjo Hangout to follow threads in which members post.

yeah but this would be able to be minimized just like the facebook one. Are you familiar with it? As a developer I know there are plenty of cool little user interface tools to help with this kind of stuff. I just kinda think having to manually trawl through stuff to find posts a bit archaic. No offence to this site in particular, that's just my feelings across the board for all online forums.

There is a similar thing called subscribing to the thread. All you have to do is click the button labeled "Subscire To This Topic" and you will receive emails about the topic in question.

Yeah im aware of that and have used it in the past, but it means that you have to also have your email handy as well, I'm suggesting a way to have it all encapsulated within the one window.

Only if you, i.e.,me, could choose not to have the irritant active for your (my) account.

Well yeah it could be an option for an account, but i dont see how it would be irritating if its able to be minimized just like the facebook one.

You average less than .67 posts a day. I average more than 6. That makes a huge difference, minimized or not.

I get about a 100 notifications in my version of what im describing on facebook per day. I asked above if you are familiar with what im describing but you did not answer me.

It would just contain a brief notification for each subscribed thread post you add, and add to this some smarts in the code that is responsible for presenting it so that it only alerts you to 3-4 replies to that thread until you view it. Not also would it be able to be minimized, it would also have a vertical scroll bar, so that when its popped up it would only ever occupy a finite amount of real estate, maybe 5-10% of the resolution of the screen.

But maybe we should close down the site suggestions part of the forum cos apparently we have reached the definitive version of the site according to some. I hate how ideas are shot down in flames by people before they ask questions or make a counter suggestion to maybe improve the idea.

I tend to agree. How many times you post does not give you any more insight into things, and using that credential as a hammer seems silly. Naaaa. Newbies come to these things with fresh eyes and ideas, and usually open minds. Listen to them. Oh, I guess I'm one too...

I dunno, given the choice of receiving 100 separate emails or having these notifications neatly organized in one scrolling screen, seems like a good idea to me. But then again, I don't know my post-per-day ratio so therefore this might not mean anything.

Yes, I think the idea would be handy.

Well post-per-day ratio is not the factor to base it off because some members might not post much but like reading and subscribing. Remember you can subscribe to threads you have not commented on. Also it could alert you that people have accepted your friend invites, etc, basically anything that you want to know is happening in this little eco system.

I don't use Facebook or MySpace. You asked about threads "you created or replied to," not reading or subscribing. My point was that given the number of threads I create or reply to, I'd be getting more than a hundred notices a day. I have no interest in going through even that many.

All this discussion is rather moot unless Eric decides he wants to do it so.... let's wait and see what he has to say.

banjo_brad - Posted - 11/20/2009:  13:02:01

I believe the discussion can give Eric an idea about whether he wants to consider it or not.

I just use the "recent posts" button when I come to the Hangout(s), and have no real need to be notified of any new posts. If I've asked a question, it will be responded to or not when I return. That's why I don't feel the need for the suggested modification.

I, too, don't use any of the "social networking" sites, so I'm not familiar with what Dbuz has suggested. I do tend to be set in my ways, though, possibly an age thing.

I made a post, way down yonder, about how it would be better to have the link in your homepage that goes to the last thread you posted to go to your last post instead of the beginning of the thread so you wouldn't have to search back through possibly multiple pages to pick up where you left off.

It's a good idea, I think...just have to figure out the best way to make it happen, and where this feature stands in line with other features we have planned. :-)

We're actually working right now on making it so you can be notified when others comment on a blog, photo MP3, etc that you've commented on. This would be the precurser (provide the data framework) for what you're proposing.

Dubz--keep the ideas coming. I like the way you think.

Surely it must be lower on the list than a FOOD FORUM

Thanks Eric. I only bother going to the trouble of voicing my suggestions on this forum cos I can see that you like to make things a little nicer than the run of the mill forum. Just from seeing how quickly you add in different hangout's, I can tell that from a technical side you have set it up nicely so that it scales well. That probably goes unnoticed by people that are not developers and don't have a technical understanding of how things are done, but it should be understood that there is extra work on the developers side of things to build a scalable code platform. Well done and I'm quite happy to lodge a suggestion thread for my ideas if they are welcome.

pssst - hey Dubz - maybe you could suggest a Food Forum

For those unfamiliar with the idea here's what it looks like on facebook...

That sits at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

Here's what it looks like when I click it:

On facebook you have control over the notifications and can indicate what you want to see there.

There's no reason, however, to place it at the bottom. Since we have the nice panel over here on the right it could be tucked right there just below the "Add Content" section. I'm looking over there from time to time just to make sure no one wants to be my "friend". :)

I'd rather have an alert system in place for stolen banjos.
