While I'm in the States next month I want to pick up a book of Béla Fleck tabs for my Russian banjo pickin' friend Nikita. The guy's been playing for barely 2 years and you should hear him tear up "Eager and Anxious". He's really into Béla's music and I'd like to know what y'all would recommend I pick up for him. I might even pick up more than one.

Thanks!

I would have say get the Drive book, but if you want a real challenge go for the tales from the acoustic planet vol. 2, I have both of those books and they are both great cant go wrong, also great for just giving you melodic and single string ideas.

1) "Drive" - definitely.
2) "Solo Banjo Works" more difficult, with a set of Tony Trischka and Bela Fleck tabs. And get the CDs too. Not only are they great to listen to, but they make learning the tunes much easier.

I think "Drive" and "Tales from the acoustic planet vol 2" will keep anyone busy for a long time, There is alot to learn in these two books and It will take you away from tradition scruggs style for a bit with a nice twist. They are alot of licks you can learn and put into your Scruggs style songs.

Buffalo Nickle is one of my favorite songs, it took a bit of work to learn but it was worth it.

I agree:
1) "Drive"
2) "Solo Banjo Works"
3) "Tales from the Acoustic Planet Vol 2."
If you can find it, his Homespun stuff is a good workout.
Also, don't overlook Alison Brown for your friend.... especially her tab book (2nd? album)

I find myself mixing bits and pieces of all of these things into my playing.
