What if Earth had rings like Saturn? What would it look like from where you live? Here's a realistic animation:

Most cool. I wonder if we could rent some rings from somewhere...

Cheers,

You kids and your crazy rings. If the Earth had rings, you'd be wondering what it would be like without them!

What if the Earth had rings?

Well, we probably wouldn't have a space program... at least not one of any consequence.

Introducing satellites and spacecraft into an environment where rings exist in an equatorial orbit would be like introducing ducks into a shooting gallery. None would last too long before getting shot full of holes.

if a frog had a glass bottom he wouldn't jump but once, but he don't.
no really, that would be different, but if it did we wouldn't think anything about it 'cause it would be the way we're used to it

It's a cool fantasy, but I rather suspect that reflected light/solar energy from the rings would have a significant impact on climate. Therefore, I doubt that any of the locations shown would look anything like they do sans rings.

Sounds like you are just trying to start an argument to me

Pity he didn't explore the aspects of the ring's shadows more, there's some mentioning of them in the comments, but not in the video. Some parts of the earth would be in the ring's shadow for months, always on the hemisphere that has winter anyway.

Sounds like Earth might have had a ring in the fairly recent past!

Someone would have to put advertizing on it.

dbaty - Posted - 11/19/2009:  13:54:55

That's pretty cool. But the Super Powers would end up trying to lay claim to them.

1four5 - Posted - 11/19/2009:  14:27:29

The sattelites would mess them up

As is, I have to go out at 3:00 A.M. to see the constellations.

pandjlocke - Posted - 11/19/2009:  21:44:58

Us folks in Seattle would never get to see them anyway because of the cloud cover. I'm glad they told us that the vid was just an animation. We'd believe it!

BvilleDon - Posted - 11/19/2009:  22:42:57

I think it might and we are just unable to perceive them, with either our eyes or our instruments. I know for a fact that my wife is a saint, but I can't see her halo, I just know it is there!

Anyone read the article in the latest National Geographic about the large numbers of planets orbiting other stars (than the sun) that have been discovered to date?

I am thinking that some of them are likely to have rings, and some may even have life. To date, planets like earth are just too small to identify. And most of the planets discovered to date haven't even been "seen." They are identified by the gravitational effects they are having on the star they orbit. But 11 have actually been photographed.

Is it only a matter of time before a planet is discovered that has rings? And perhaps life?

You people need to go visit Santa Cruz California.... THEY have rings.... nose rings, ear rings, belly rings , and ehemmm... can't say that here can I. As they say in Santa Cruz,,,, "Keep Santa Cruz Wierd".. and they do.

Me, I live in Browns Valley where it's normal.

Lord of the Rings might have been worth reading.
Wagner's Ring Cycle might have been shorter, and worth hearing.
