I realize the album is 5 years old, and most of you have probably heard it, but I got the Tribute to the King of Bluegrass album last night. I have been studying J.D. and Kenny, and other pickers that played with Jimmy Martin.

I had my ear buds in last night when I went to bed and I listened that album 3 times. I couldn't go to sleep. Man that's good stuff.

Four veteran members of the Sunny Mountain Boys, Audie Blaylock, Kenny Ingram, J.D. Crowe, with help from Paul Williams, Jason Moore, Mike Cleveland, Harry Stinson, Ben Isaacs and Sonya Isaacs. Doing the Jimmy Martin classics.

I bought this album when it first came out and it was about all I listened to for 6 months. Despite Jimmy" many shortcomings he was a special cat when it came to putting a band together and putting it all together. He really was the KING. Too bad they didn'take a video when they made the tribute album. Bet they had fun.

You're right about having fun at these sessions!!!!!!!! When we started recording these songs me,Audie, Paul & JD were all setting at a table in the studio. Paul said, "Well What Are Ya'll Wanting To do?" I had the list of song on a sheet so I pushed it across the table to Paul. He looked at it a little nervous and said, Well Let's Go And Try One And See How It Goes." After we cut the 1st song you couldn't keep JD & Paul out of the studio. They both had a great time together. All 17 tracks were cut in 2 days and all were done in 1 or 2 cuts. The only song we had a little trouble with was Doing My Time with the ending. It was great hearing storys between JD & Paul. The last time they had recorded together was 1960 and that was on a Jimmy Martin session. This was the best time I ever had in a recording session.

Kenny, I'm guessing that's you on "You Don't Know My Mind" and "Tennessee", is that correct? What about "Sophronie"? Was that you or JD?

I actually had to cheat and ask Kenny, then marked them all in iTunes so I could remember. Love that CD.

2 days? Sigh..
Doing my Time is my favorite song on that album. That sucker drives!

What I like about this CD is that the major part of it was cut Live. Everybody was there when it was done. It had a few things done to it like the tripple fiddles Mike played on I Cried Again and the snare was added after everything was cut. Harry was buzzing right thru all the cuts till he came to Doing My Time. When that ending came up and stopped and started like it did he said "WHOA!!!!!!!!" He all had a good laugh on that one. It took him about 3 trys to nail that one. Like I said, it was the most fun & easiest recording I've ever done.

Hey mopick, Don't forget, Paul Williams was a Sunny Mtn. Boy too. That's one of my favorite cd's to come out in the last several years. Kenny, you and J.D. sure take all of us to school on Jimmy Martin style banjo playing on that recording. Hope you all might do a follow up some time.

This album is still in my cd player! I was late getting my copy but am glad I did. Not only is it a history lesson, but Ive been able to steal alot of ideas for backup from kenny and jd. If you dont have one go out and get it. You wont be sorry if you like traditional hard driving bluegrass! GREAT STUFF BIG K! ;)
