Mary I've yet to understand what happened to me when I started to learn to play the banjo. I see a beautiful banjo and I imagine it in my hands. There must be a better name for the disease. BAS just doesn't seem to really do it for me. They become like good friends that you never want to part with. I've got Helix putting one together for me and I'll probably have a thread in a few weeks and maybe even a sound file. Have fun!

Hey, Dave, I sure hope you do post some sound files when you get your Helix! What kind of wood is Larry using for your banjo? I am definitely getting a Helix once certain people pay me some money they owe me!
If you (or anybody) can come up with a better name than Banjo Acquisition Syndrome, let's hear it!

Mary, I asked Helix to use what he would use if he were making it for his personal use. So I'll find out when he's got 'er done. Stay tuned.

Strangely, although I'm primarily an old-time player, with a half-dozen or so openbacks (three of which I play regularly), my BAS stopped dead when I got my '27 NHAT converted TB-3. Go figure.

And mine was cured by an OME.

This thread was NOT a set-up; I really was getting caught up in BAS. But then I found this photo purely by accident last night and I think I might be cured for awhile. And better prepared for Thanksgiving next week.

p.s. Mike, there may be some ugly copyright issues involved here. Be warned.

I salute the lad. There are some people who get all nasty about instruments other than the 'traditional" ones, being used in Bluegrass, and there are some who get nasty about the banjo being used on other than "traditional" songs.
But the young fellow is carrying on THE most traditional tradition of banjo: Making the best with what little is available.
Let's start a rumor that, since the earliest known banjos were gourds, "VEGA" is short for "VEGtable"

I just got a '26 TB-3 with a Sullivan BB conversion ring and a 40 year old Frank Neat neck. I also got all of the original ball bearing parts. I think ill be cured for a while.

It's a remission, not a cure.

Right on, Mike! That kid rules.

BAS can be cured, but it's expensive. Take 2 banjoes and post on here in the morning. Paul

At least it's not like with boats, where the next one has to be bigger! And that remission thing is true. I am in serious relationships with my present banjos, but I can't help myself from looking...
Voyageur - Posted - 11/22/2009: 06:22:57
Well, Jim, it's hard to beat an Ome Bright Angel! I'd like one of those myself someday - but an open-back, of course.

Not meant to hijack, but notice the kid in the picture has his strap...ahh...string over one shoulder.

Why would you want to cure BAS? Your collection 's not complete without a Helically mounted head
Goldstarman - Posted - 11/23/2009: 09:57:27
Nechvilles are awsome
dpete210 - Posted - 11/23/2009: 10:38:39
Tom is not joking! You are not complete without a Nechville banjo in your stall. I can attest to that. What a great banjo! You will find yourself marveling at its design and loving its playability and sound!
BAS may never be cured, as some believe there is no known cure. Some claim their BAS is cured. I don't doubt their sincerity, But it may only be TEMPORARY.
LEUllman - Posted - 11/23/2009: 17:06:46
Mary,
Banjos are like Lays potato chips: betcha can't play just one!
Besides, everyone needs at least two Tubaphones: a 10-15/16" and a big-pot 11-13/16".
