The guitar player in our band has a 1977?, Gold Star HF12, maple, multiply rim, 40 hole archtop, tube and plate. I haven't payed much attention to these banjos, and couldn't find any comps. I seem to recall reading in the past, that the early Gold Star's were fairly desirable instruments. Can anyone provide an ball park estimate of its current value?

Current value and real value are very different at the moment. There is currently one just like the one that you have described in the classified ads here on the hangout. The owner is asking $1400 but it has been there for a while.

I think the 3 ply/opf models are more desirable. I owned a 1976 11W(mahogany) tube & plate and it was a good archtop. I ended up putting a Stew Mac 3 ply rim and FH ring in it and liked it better, but not enough to keep.
I wouldn't give 1400 for one.

I had a GoldStar H&F flathead from that era as well as one just like you are describing. I like archtops, but I remember that the flathead was hands down a better banjo than that particular arch top.
The store I worked in was a Goldstar dealer ... we had a lot of those banjos circa 78-79.
I also had an Ode D at that time and it was a far better banjo (IMO) than either of the Gold Stars.

Ive seen the arch tops go for pretty cheap. not as valuable as a flat head

I bought an '81 G12 last year here in the UK for £450 and its worth every penny, brilliant instrument for the money and nothing comes close [in that price range] for that full on AT cut.

The G12 model has a multi-ply rim, as you say, which is not so desirable. Those early AT Gold Stars sounded pretty good, but Steve had a good reason for changing the rim to a 3-ply. I see old Gold Star flatheads being currently sold for around $1,500, but the $1,200 that Bob's friend paid for a G12 seems at the top of the range for that model.
