Hello, Does anyone know if Gibson made a Banjo with a mohogany neck and res. with a Flying Eagle inlay and if so what model is it? Thanks Will

The J D Crowe RB-75 was mahogany and had the Flying Eagle inlay set in the fingerboard with the Style 3 headstock.

Don Reno's RB-3, "Old Nellie" had the flying eagle/squashed frog inlay on the neck and style 3 on the peghead too. Some 3/75 models also had the fancier style 4 peghead inlay.

I believe Gibson built a custom Granada a few years ago with a Mahogany neck and FE inlays, but I can't recall who the customer was or the serial number.

See the "Bill Worrell" RB-75 in the Jim Mills book. Jim alludes to a very few others like it, including Sonny's.
Have you got one, Deltawill? RB

I have a 1995 Gibson RB3 with a flying eagle inlay, on the card with the banjo it is labelled as Don Reno inlay.

Gibson Made a Bunch of banjos with Mahogany Neck and Res and Flying Eage Inlay. RB-3's, RB-75's, Some RB-4's(Butch Robbins RB-4 to be Exact). There might be some custom jobs out there like a Mahogany Granada or a 250 with the FE Pattern.

OOPS,Butches had H&F. Sry my bad, Wasnt Snuffys RB-4 Mahogany too, it looks that way in jims book.

David you got it half right.........but style 4's are walnut.
mastertone250 - Posted - 11/20/2009: 20:39:40
Yea, i know RB-4s are walnut, but butches was Mahogany wasnt it. In jims book, Butches has a Mahogany resonator. Looking at Snuffys, i can see the walnut in it. The old resonators dont have those heavy swirls and stuff, the new Burl Walnut resonators have.

IDK if Butches RB-4 is walnut or not? It doesnt Say
banjomartin88 - Posted - 11/20/2009: 22:29:00
If its a 4 then its walnut.

Correct. Both the Butch Robins RB-4 (9583-1) and the Snuffy Jenkins RB-4 (9639-1) are Walnut, but both of those banjos have the smaller WBW concentric rings on the resonator, instead of typical wood marquetry rings, that are more typical of a one piece flange walnut #4. Also, both of those banjos...like most, but not all one piece flange #4s are chrome.

One-piece flange RB-4 = walnut
Earlier two-piece flange -4 (nearly all TB's) = mahogany
Except for any exceptions.

True. I just figured we were talking about 1pc flange banjos so I left the early ones out.
