Here is a nice banjo for auction on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/Heavily-Inlaid-...em2303e70af5
I think it is a Buckbee, because it is almost identical to the Geo. C. Dobson I got a few weeks ago, which was made by Buckbee. The only differences are the peghead inlay and that this banjo has more brackets. Seems like a good deal and no one is bidding, maybe because the name Hermann Sonntag is unfamiliar. If didn't have the Dobson, I'd bid on this one. Heck, if I had lots more money I'd bid on it anyway, because the Dobson is one sweet little banjo!

It IS a pretty nice banjo. Mugwumps lists Hermann Sonntag as a New York maker in the latter half of the 19th century. The banjo has many similarities to run-of-the-mill Buckbee banjos, but some differences, too. Hence, I am guessing that Sonntag used Buckbee as a supplier for major parts or semifinished banjos.

Is a parlor banjo the same thing as an S.S. Stewart Lady Banjo?

Thanks, Timmo. Old banjo history is so interesting. Have you read "America's Instrument - the Banjo in the Nineteenth Century" by Philip Gura? I have not, but was thinking about buying it.
