I just got my old gibson tb 1 back from Huber with the new ring in it. Oh my.I never played a banjo this great.I mean it has everything I've ever dreamed of having in a banjo. I've played some old flatheads but I don't think mine would have to take a back seat to any of em. I'm so excited. This thing is a hoss.

David,

You could always satisfy our curiosities and post a sound clip or video of your TB-1 with the new HR-30 ring! I've really enjoyed the old video of you with the DC Boys though and it would be a shame to remove it. Great picking, by the way.

Did you get the rim also?

Life is but a vapor.

I really enjoyed the videos of your band. Great picking and singing.

Thanks everyone. No I didn't get the new rim.I'm not sure you can beat the old prewar rims. I know I've never owned a banjo as good as this one.I can't put it down.I'm not sure how to put up a sound clip of it but I'll try to figure it out.

Hey David,
I enjoyed talking to you and playing that old tb1 this year at the Luray Bluegrass Festival. That banjo sounded good then. Id like to play it now. I'm the guy that had the Chief and the Huber. I just sold the ring that was in my Huber and have the HR-30 on order from Steve. I cant wait to try it in my Lancaster. I really enjoyed your banjo playing. You got it happening my friend! Dont take that video off you tube!

Yea man great sounding lancaster. I love Galax to that is a great week!!! My new Huber has the standard rim but the HR-30 ring. It is opening up nicely and has a lot of power!

Here is the new prototype. The camera man must not like banjos but you can hear it good on the first part.

Anyone - Do you think a huber ring will open up my 95 Granada? I've heard that it's as much (if not more) the rim that makes the difference and not what tone ring is in the banjo....Thanks

banjodr - Posted - 12/04/2009:  11:01:15

It's as much fit of ring to rim also and that has been most of the problem with most of the newer Gibsons but to answer your question it will definately help to put a Huber in. Go for it

I had a 1990 Granada that I put a Huber tone ring in. Made it sound a lot better. But the thing that really helped was when I bought a Huber banjo and sold the Granada.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'm now deciding between a Huber Lancaster and Yates mahogany.
I probably will keep the Granada - FYI - I had a pre-war Flat head 75 that I bought in late 70's from Geoff Howald. It came with a 5 string neck made by Al Jamison in Cincinnati. I sold it in mid 80's to get money to start a business. Can't imagine what it would be worth today.

I tried to be humorous with that statement, but the truth is, it's true. I was worried that when I got the new Huber, that there wouldn't be enough difference between the Huber and my Granada with a Huber ring. That would have made it hard to justify with my wife. But there was a huge difference.

I guess the sum of the parts and how they are fit together makes a big difference in the world of banjos.

Well, I got my HR-30 a couple of weeks ago and put it in my Lancaster. This is a really awesome ring. Still have that Huber sound, but with more power and tone than my old ring. Steve Huber makes some great products, and takes the time to do it right! I'm impressed!

Ha ha, nice one... Totally agree of course. The Huber ring's good, but I think the whole package is the winner. The ring to rim fit (already mentioned here), the rim itself and the neck to rim fit is what Huber does best. I'm not saying other banjo makers don't, but if you like the Huber sound IMO, and of course I'm bias, you need a Huber banjo not just the ring.

hey dc boys

just wanted to say that is some awesome picking. i hear a lot of players sacrifice tone and play sloppy at those speeds (i am one of those players). the notes just seem to blend together into a mess and i cant hear any melody or individual notes.

you do a great job at playing fast and making it sound GOOD. something im working on now. trying to go back to square one and get clean & clear before i move on.

The irony of it all! You may have made more money by keeping the banjo and going fishing. You never know. One thing is for sure, you won't be happy with anything else (except maybe a Huber or Yates or Burlile). Depends on what you like.
