Let's just say that Gibson produced the banjo of your dreams in the prewar era, what would it consist of? Ok, here's my wish list, what's on yours?
1. Fancy Flying Eagle design
2. High Profile Flathead Tonering
3. Granada gold plated and etched hardware
4. Checkerboard Binding
5. Top Tension
6.Starburst finish inlay on resonator
7. Clamshell tailpiece
8. Kluson stairstep tuners

I would wish I had the money to pay for it.

Poverty Ridge Bluegrass

I'd have one made by sending my tb2 back to them for the addition of a 5 string FE walnut neck and a flathead tonering.
Oh,wait...I already had Jimmy Cox do that so there's no need.

Style 6 in Argentine Grey finish with checkerboard ONLY on maple resonator, plain white binding on ebony fingerboard, standard Style 6 inlays, "X" engraving pattern, with BOTH a full height/weight flat head tone ring AND a conversion arch top tone ring that would fit the short rim - both correctly engraved! With an unbreakable Rogers 3 star calfskin head that would never get dirty. In a GEIB red line case. Planet tuners. Short Kershner 5 string tailpiece, engraved.

Actually, Gibson did exactly that, with a 20-hole ring, a Brazilian rosewood fretboard.
It's got a POW-erful 4th string, and the banjo's volume gets stronger as I proceed up the neck! Deep, hollowness at position Y and hard-as-nails at position X. It''s got it all.

Oh! Inlays? Yes, it's got some, as I recall . Hardware? Seems to be all there and nothing is pitted or pulled up. The wood is finished, and the tuners hold the tuning.

I'd say they got it right.

Gibson almost made my favorite. Mine would be a Ballbearing 5-string Bela Voce. Just missed it by 1 year.

Oh well, I couldn't afford it anyway, and I'd be afraid to touch it. This would be my ultimate collector banjo.

Best,

It would look exactly like the Posie Roach RB-75

I have my dream banjo. It's an original PW style 5, flathead and RB neck with Florentine peghead. Looks good, sounds good and plays nice. Love it.

Well, if we are going to go off in "fantasy land", and I don't mind that one iota!!!

I would want a late thirties RB-75 with the following:

flathead 20-hole tonering gold-plated with style 18 engraving
mahogany neck, v-profile, arched fingerboard in Brazilian rosewood
nickel-plated hardware everywhere else
presto five-string tailpiece
wreath inlay
late 20's style Granada resonator in flamed maple with concentric rings of wood purfling mahogany neck stained in a dark color to match resonator
Grover pancake tuners with amber buttons
redline period five-string case
original order sheet and sales receipt

and while I'm at it...the ability to play the "fool" out of this particular banjo

lets see i would use:

the pot assembly from sonnys granada,
the resonator from JDs banger banjo,
and the neck from the old top tension that
sammy shelor used to have.

i think that would be a pretty awesome combination.

They did build the banjo of my dreams back then, Sonny Osborne has been picking for years now!! I think his granada is "it" when it comes to my ideal tone, but on the same note; I'm sure it doesn't sound the same when someone besides Sonny is playing it.

Bob! You need to play my RB4 again with the new pre war 5-string neck! It has utterly transformed the sound of the banjo, and I think you'd like it now. Passing thru central CA soon?

A 1937 () RB-75, preferably one like Bela has.

All mahogany dark stained, like Style 1.

Either bats (Style 1) or H&F inlays.

Old Presto tailpiece.

11/16 Scorpion bridge.

4 Keith tuners, 1 Stew Mac planetary 5th.

And if I can't have that, a 1937 RB-1 with a Huber ring and, uhh....

O wait.......

RB-1 plays with Heartstrings:

Hearts & Flowers in ebony radiused fretboard
Walnut neck with burl resonator
Double cut peghead
All nickel hardware
Flathead
Kershner tp

Hmm... Now that I think of it, that's pretty close to Butch Robins' RB-4, actually... but I think the missing inlay at the 14th fret looks like a mistake.

There's a archtop Bella Voce in the first Tsumura book with an extended fingerboard.

Simple, elegant, and no 5th string to get in the way!

Hey, RB-1! You've almost exactly described F943-1! Which I fortunately don't have to wish for.
