Does anyone have chords and/or links on how to play some jug band songs. I'm thinking of Memphis Shakedown or some Gus Cannon stuff. I'd guess I'm talking about I IV V progressions, but the key would be helpful also ways to jazz up the songs. Thanks a lot for any advice you can pass along.

db,

I´ll ask a banjo buddy of mine about this and get back to you - he´s an absolutely expert regarding jugs.

Here´s a poor rehearsal recording of Columbus Stockade Blues - with him on an irish tuned tenor and song, me on a standard tuned ditto plus a Sousa - I´ve never played this tune or style before - however do notice my solo at the end - do also notice the very special jug rhythm used - plus notice, that chord progressions are very simple.

Try finding the chords to Five Foot Two and Bill Bailey and try those tunes.
Ain't She Sweet and Sweet Georgia Brown are a couple more.

They'll get you into the chord progressions often used for those songs.

I Don't Love Nobody is the classic song in that genre I believe.

Most of the songs have a ragtime progression that jumps ahead on the circle of fifths and walks it's way back (in addition to using the 1-4-5 chords).

Ain't She Sweet AABA
A:
|Am Ab7 G7 / |Am Ab7 G / |
|C E7 A7 / |D9 G7 C (G7) |
B:
|F9 / / / |C / / * |
|F9 / / / |C / G7 / |

=======================
Five Foot Two
AABA

A:G / B / E / / /
A / D / G / / (G+)

B: B / / / E / / /
A / / / D / / /

Key of C: C E A D G C
======================
Bill Bailey
by Hughie Cannon

D / / / | / / / / |
/ / / D#- | A7 / / / |
/ / / / | / / / / |
/ / / A+7 | D D#- Em7 A7 |
D / / / | / / / / |
D7 / / / | G B7 Em / |
G / E7 / | D / B7 / |
Em7 / A7 / | D / / / |

"Won't you come home, Bill Bailey?
Won't you come home?"
She cried the whole night long.
"I'll do the cooking honey, I'll pay the rent.
I know I done you wrong.
Remember that rainy evening I drove you out
with nothing but a fine-tooth comb?
Well I know I'm to blame,
well ain't that a shame?
Bill Bailey won't you please come home?"
=========================

Convert all these to the same key and you'll see the ragtime progression in each of those.

I've been playing a lot of tunes with the I VI7 II7 V7 progression. I've done all of these in C. Feel free to transpose. Four beats to a measure / /. A chord in parentheses (G7) is used only in the turnaround. Stay on the tonic the last time through.

The names in parentheses behind the titles are my sources for the tunes, not necessarily the composers.

I'm Satisfied With My Girl - ( Jim Kweskin Jug Band)

C / /C B Bb/A7 /D7 /G7 /C /G7 /

C / /C B Bb/A7 /D7 /G7 /C / /

E7 / /A7 / /D7 / /G7 / /

C / /C B Bb/A7 /D7 /G7 /C /(G7) /

************************************************
They're Red Hot (Robert Johnson)
C /A7 /D7 G7 /C G7 /C /A7 /D7 /G7 /

C /C7 /F /Cdim /C /A7 /D7 G7 /C (G7)/
These chords also work for:
Bring It On Home ( Pink Anderson)
Hey Babe You Want To Boogie? (John Hartford)
Alice's Restaurant (Arlo Guthrie)
You Can't Tame Wild Women (Washboard Hank)
and Jada if you replace the first four bars of the second line with
C D7/G7 /C D7/G7 /

*************************************************
Jimmie Rogers used this progression a lot:
All Along The Water Tank
C /C7 /F /C /F /C A7/D7 /G7 /
C /C7 /F /C /F /C A7/D7 G7/C /
Yodel-C /G7 /C /(G7) /

Almost any Jimmie Rogers Blues
C /G7 /C /C7 /F / /C /A7 /D7 /G7 /C / /
Yodel-C /G7 /C /(G7) /

Any Old Time
Verse:C /C7 /F /C /F /C A7/D7 /G7 /
C /C7 /F /C /F G7/C A7/D7 G7 /C G7/
Chorus:C / / /C7 /F / / /C /
G7 / .C /A7 /D7 / /G7 / /
C / / /F /C /G7 /C /(G7) /

The chords Minstrel Mike gave for Five Foot Two will also work for Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone.
