There are some really interesting avatars used at the Banjo Hangout.

I was wondering how people came about choosing their specific avatar. Is it simply a favorite photo, or an image someone found amusing, or maybe something that has a meaning to the user, or some other reason?

You tell me yours and I'll tell you mine.

I use mine, because it's me.

The one I used to use (and sometimes still do) is - - - - - > > > This one below:

It's a crop of a picture showing the peghead of Vassar Clement's fiddle, given to him by John Hartford.
Yep - - - there's a story behind that, but it's too long to post here.

Mine may be a bit morbid, but it is a picture that Chris Quinn took when he and I went to pick up my Hatfield Custom. On the way back we stopped at the Monroe Childhood home in Rosine, then went to visit the Cemetery to see Bill's grave. I love the picture that Chris took, it is a reminder of my visit to the birthplace of Bluegrass.

I drew my own, to reflect a bit of my personality and how I feel about playing the banjo. Works for me (and at least one other).

I've changed mine quite a few times but have stuck with this one for a while.

I'm an avid motorcyclist (it was 32 F when I left the house this morning at 4:30 AM for a 40 mile ride - that should tell you something). The suicidal gas pump is a play on the great gas mileage we bikers enjoy. It's on a variety of products like t-shirts and coffee mugs at a rider supply house I buy a lot of stuff from. I feel it is unusual and captures another side of me from my music.

When I was a teenager - in the 1970s - living on the lower half of Manhattan the local socialist and communist organizations engaged in a global dispute regarding the politics of Enver Hoxha, the leader of Albania. I really never understood whether he was a Stalinist or a Maoist, but there were flyers all over town for a while for meetings to discuss him and one had labeled him a Dogmato-Revisionist, a phrase that I've since loved. So, I use a picture of him as an avatar.

Because I like the old Pogo comic by Walt Kelly, and Churchy's playing a banjo of sorts.
I also have an avatar picture of Col Kilgore in Apocalypse Now that I Photoshopped so that he's holding one of my banjos instead of his original M16. I don't particularly like the movie, but I thought it made for a humorous avatar.

I have alway's been interested in Negro Folk Lore, (I guess I can say that). Such an interesting time in history and I've alway's been interested in their culture. I imagine that during the time of slavery that music or Banjo pickin was their way to escape the hardship that some might be going through.

My dad was a fireman and head brakeman on the Illinois Central Railroad. He rode on the old steam locomotives and I have some pictures on my home page of a locomotive he worked on, the 2542, a 4-8-2 Mountain which, by the way, is still in existence living on display on a siding in McComb, MS. Although this avatar is not a picture of the 2542 it was simply a cool picture.

Speaking of cool pictures I'm thinking about switching to this one of yours truly next:

But you can be happy if you've a mind to

All ya gotta do is put your mind to it
Knuckle down, buckle down, do it, do it, do it

Well, ya can't go a-swimmin' in a baseball pool
Ya can't go swimmin' in a baseball pool
Ya can't go swimmin' in a baseball pool
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
Ya can't change film with a kid on your back

But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't drive around with a tiger in your car
