Does a bracket band make much difference on a tubaphone banjo? I'm on the fence.

It should add to the power and sustain because of the extra weight. I won't buy a tubby without a bracket band. But that's my opinion.

*** Bill, is this also true of a WL? The bracketband will add to the power and sustain?

Yeah; both my Essex WL clones are bracket-band banjos. Note though, that the original Fairbanks Electric (which inaugurated the scalloped tone ring) banjos had no bracket band. All tubbies up until the mid-late 30s had them. Same for Whyte Laydies. It's the bracket band (and the natural color) that distinguished the WLs.

That's a signature line, where I'm given to understand it's ok.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm ready to get off the fence!

Yeah, if I bought another Tubaphone or a WL, I would want a bracket band. Just does not seem natural without it. However it does had weight. My 12" Ome silverspun tone ring open back - does not have a bracket band - and coming from a vintage pot Tubaphone - I was a bit worried that it did not. However, I am getting plenty of sustain with the Ome; so, I am glad to shed that extra weight.

*** I am still waiting for my 1921 WL pot with A-scale Wyatt Fawley neck to get here. It is supposed to arrive this weekend. I cant wait to see and hear the differences between this banjo and my current A-scale Reiter Galax with Electric tone ring!!!!

I have a Vega long neck that was put together from assorted parts by a luthier in San Diego (he now works at Taylor). It has a little wonder tone ring but a bracket band. He felt that 80% of the tone of the Vega is in the bracket band, not the tubaphone ring. The sound of that banjo tends to make me agree. OTOH, my Deering Vega Long Neck is by far the best banjo I have ever owned.
