I've got some issues with my current tailpiece on my cookie, since it's a picture hanger: http://www.banjohangout.org/myhango...albumid=2268

it makes a ringing sound since the string (mostly 1st string) rests directly on the cookie tin from the tail piece (pictuer hanger).

I need a tail piece I can connect through the bottom of the cookie tin and screw into the wood, not something that attaches to the brackets, since there are no brackets. yet something inexpensive, after all this is a cookie tin, yet I'm very attached to the cookie tin, and if I could rid of the ringing it would be helpful.

Thank you.

On some of my cigarbox banjos I've used a small brass hinge as a tailpiece. They come in some interesting shapes and different sizes so that you can get a good fit and the bend comes in the right place. I've always used them on wood, so I've never had a noise issue like you describe. Maybe, if you still are getting the ringing, a piece of felt under the hinge will help.

So for the hinge, I can see that it would screw into the bottom of the tin/wood and then the hinge part would swing over the top of the corner, and I am assuming you would thread the strings through the hole and double the string back through its self to hold it in the screw holes? It seems like thoud would cure the strings touching the head corner? Do hinges this small have 5 holes in them, or do you drill them in?

I've alway used Nylon strings, so that makes attaching them much easer. I usually tie a loop that fits over the end pin, come over the top of the hinge and then through the holes and under to the bridge. It should work with looped end metal strings. If you want to attach them to the top of the hinge, maybe some ball end strings with a small washer to prevent them from going through the holes in the hinges would work.

It has been a number of years since I did that. Most of my cigarboxes now are ukuleles with a fixed bridge.

The hinges I used had three holes and I would double up strings on the outside holes and run the G string through the middle by itself.
