If she's country, I'm North Korean.

I didn't see the program, but I have to agree with you Doug. I just wish they'd stop calling it "Country" music and give it a more realistic name. I won't speculate on what that name should be. I've a feeling that if they'd been playing that stuff when I was a kid, my parents would not have allowed me to listen to it.
I could go on a real rant here, but it would accomplish nothing. The path it's gone down is just sickening. It's a real shame that if a talented kid (male or female) cannot also be a sex symbol, they just can't make a living.
Besides that, there's just too much chain saw guitar and crashing drums in it.

I agree, there's no such thing as country music anymore. They should just go ahead and call it rock and roll, that's what it is anyway.

I disagree that there isn't real Country Music out there. It is the Country Pop Crap that is pushed by Nashville that is the problem. Hank Williams III and Wayne Hancock, even Willie still play good country. There are many others, I just used those three as examples.

....several years ago, Ralph Emery and then later, Tom T Hall ,did a syndicated TV show called "Pop Goes the Country" this is where the country music industry wanted to go...IMHO.....to cash in on the popular culture that was/is country music....and I believe, that who ever the powers that be is, they've done a good job of it....at the same time ,it reflects the pluralism of that "pop" culture because that's where the audience is .....sadly though, "as the tree grows bigger, the less is thought about the roots"..... and that 's a big part of of the marketability of anything that is for sale... I would think that the last thing on her mind would be wanting to be known as "Carrie Underwear" instead of" Underwood" but in this visual age and the power of shock value, who knows....I'll just keep on pickin' the banjo....that's shock value enough for most folks I meet.... ....peace

IMHO, what I've found is that there's two different segments in country music now. Half the music is going off in a pop direction, while the other half seems to have drifted a little closer to the roots of country music. Some of the country artists are in both worlds and their music varies between the two. Some like Alan Jackson, Josh Turner (for the most part), and a few others have stayed pretty close to the roots through their entire career. Some have come out with next to nothing close to the roots (Carry Underwood, Big and Rich, and others). Then some actually do a gentle mix of both worlds, which is pretty good in my opinion (Zac Brown Band). There's good country out there, you just gotta look for it sometimes. That's just my two cents.

I'm with Tom. It's also refreshing to see artists singing again. I'd rather see today's country taking over the pop scene, than the crotch grabbing talkers who can't pull their pants up.

Thanks Doug for telling like it is. There's still some real country that sneaks through (like Alan Jackson, George Strait, Vince Gill). But I have to agree with what the rock n' roller Tom Petty says about the so called modern country music: It's bad rock n' roll with a fiddle. By the way, did anyone see John Fogerty on Conan O'Brien last night with fiddle, pedal steel guitar and upright bass? His new cd is more country than a lot of the stuff coming out of Nashvegas to me. While listening to the radio today I heard that The Eagles are nominated for country group of the year. I'll say no more. There is still some country music out there, but not always on the radio. Lee, I'm with you on Little Jimmy Dickens - still great, and one of the last of the old ones.

I was scanning through the channels a couple of nights ago and ran across the CMA awards. I used to stay up for the CMA awards and back in the 80's I was saying man that's cool. I'm talking stuff like Travis Tritt, and Marty Stuart doing country that sounded more like 38 special, and Molly Hatchet. Kind of southern rock. My old boss, who was pure old country said, "Boy, that ain't country, that's rock and roll."
When I saw Brad Paisley introduce Carey Underwood saying, "She has the number one song in country, and the number one album." It pegged my curiosity. Then she came out with those sparkly gold hot pants and bunch of women dressed like hookers. I couldn't understand a word she was singing and it sure wasn't country.
Then Vince Gill did a song with some pop band named Duaghtry. Vince might as well not been on stage, It definitely wasn't about Vince or country music. It seemed to be more of an introduction to Daughtry and I'm sure they are trying to cross over to country where the money is, like Darius Rucker did. Good luck Darius, you're going to need a little more country soul than you showed the other night.
I heard the Dave Matthews band was going to appear later with Kenny Chesney. Kidd Rock? Kid Rock, you got to be kidding me?
Was there any country on the CMA? I hope George Strait, or Reba did something, I don't know because I turned off the TV and went to bed.

I am just to old i think.. When I was growing up, during The last part of the depression,, and During WW 2, My dad was a Poor Coal minor, We lived in town in a little Three room house,, not three bedrooms, three rooms, Two coal stoves to heat 3 rooms. An out door toilet, up by The alley, down By the house We had a well, We would throw in a 3 gallon bucket with a rope, take it in the house, put in bigger bucket, and all drink with the same dipper,, anyway I'm sure some of You older guys grew up kinda like that?? I went down in the coal mine to help My dad when i was about 10 years old, I didn't do much, but sit and watch Him do all the work, He was the best coal loader in the mine, one good day He loaded 16, and 1/4 ton of coal, from 6:00 Am til 5:30 P.M. Then We went out and He hauled a load of coal 20 miles out in the country, most everybody burned coal, even farmers, What I like best about being down in the mine all those hours and days He would sing while working, He knew every word to all Jimmie Rodgers Records, and Most Gene Autry's,, Blue Sky Boys,, Jimmie Davies,, All od Ernest Tubb's, plus many others,, and He was a very good singer, Also An almost Champion Pool player, He learned that before He got married, at age 25, another thing I liked about My Dad was Of couse We didn't have T.V. That just goes to prove that the media and the promoters can make anything popular that they want. If you throw enough publicity at it lots of people will like it just because they perceive it as "cutting edge" and therefore must have it. That is where the money is. Most of the people that buy the new music these days know little or nothing about music. They just listen to what they are told to like. I can't say anything negative about what they call "country" these days because many of the people making the music are talented performers but they are most definitely not country. Calling what they do country, puts a big roadblock in the path of new performers that want to actually play true country music that most of us would enjoy. If they won't play the new music they have a very hard time getting anyone to record and promote them so if they want to get into the busine$$ they have to sell out and play what they are told. There is nothing wrong with music changing with time but when it becomes something totally different than it started to be it should be re-named to what it really is so the origins can still exist intact. I liked seeing Little Jimmy Dickens come out for his take-off on Kanye West. I hate to say it, but I think Kid Rock can play better country music than a lot of the "stars" - much to my own surprise.
Years ago, my band got a gig as a local opening act for a "sub-national country band" that was coming through our area. No pay, but we were asked by a local country radio station, and I thought it would be fun for the experience (not the stage experience, but the stories to tell later). We opened with our mix of half bluegrass songs along with a few by Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, the Delmore Brothers, and the like. We were followed by a couple other local bands, all trying to play "new country."
The headliners came with a Nashville agent I had even heard of, and put on quite a show, jumping off the stage into the audience, climbing on tables, and all the other modern show tricks. They were good guys, just trying to do what they were told it takes to make it big. I talked with them a bit, mainly because they came over to talk to me. One said, "Man, I wish we could play some of your stuff instead of what they make us play." I was surprised, but realized they had been playing together for years, and decided to turn career over to the agent for one last shot. Sadly, I never heard of them again after that show. Also, a while after that I turned the country station in my car and discovered they had changed to rap music overnight.

Man, you have lived the old songs, especially the old coal mine songs. I bet "Dark as a Dungeon way down in the Mines" has a special meaning for you. I grew up in the boot heel of Missouri, farm country. We did have a well we drew water out of. I can still taste that cool, clear water. We had a pump house and indoor plumbing, but it was so full of iron that it was almost unusable. The old out-house was still in the back yard, but we had a bathroom in the house. My friends had out houses though, and had to cut wood in the morning to heat their houses. I saw a news story on Appalachia that showed the poorer of the poor picking up big chunks of coal along side the road (an exposed vein of coal) to burn to keep the house warm. Pick you have lived the life, and learned from it. That's the real problem with country music, you have people who've gone to college trying to sing about anguish. I'm from Alabama and lived in saw mill country where my dad snaked logs and hauled 'em on a rubber tired wagon with a team of horses. Went back there about ten years ago, and the old saw mill is still going, and the church I went to as a boy still stands and is active today.
Things were hard, people went hungry, you sure as heck didn't have a problem with people having to go to the gym to shake off those pounds, there wasn't any extra meat on anyone's bones that I knew. A fat man was most likely a preacher, a politician, or a used car salesman. My dad never did learn to drive a car, we went where we were going by wagon, horse, or mule, failing that we went on foot no matter how far it was.
When I took up playing music it was 'cause I couldn't afford any thing else to do. I just got lucky and came by a guitar, which wasn't much. It kept me happy on long cold nights before I married. When I did get married I got lucky and got a good guitar and that was all the entertainment I had for years. Times are much better for me now financially, but I don't know if I live any better.

If you just watched "Good Morning America" you might have just seen Carey Underwood's underwear.
How is that out of the ordinary? Women leave their bra-straps hang out, the tops of their thongs, (not the ones on their feet) and often cut holes in the seat of their pants to look like a poor person with a thousand dollars worth of jewelry on and a three hundred dollar pair of shoes. If they happen to be singing, so what?
