The apprenticeship "officially" ended in July but I was just up there this past Saturday. What a GREAT experience.

I know that this sounds corny, but Franklin George changed my life as far as music is concerned. I'd taken a few lessons as a teenager back in the 70s when I bought Frank's first Lp on Kanawa, the one with the two bagpipe cuts. Shortly there after my folk revival records were sent away and I've never looked back.

Every Frank George post always makes me think about Pat Dunford. Frank said Pat had one of the greatest collections of field recordings, but they seemed to have disappeared after Pat's untimely death. Anyone have any clues about these recordings. Could any of you WV boys ask Franklin?

I sure enjoyed meeting Mr. George last year at Breakin' Up Winter. I remember him saying at one point: "Everyone plays too fast."

Chad, thanks for posting this! This made my day.

This is a tune I've heard many times, but this is one of my senior moments. What's the name of the tune in the first half of the clip?

That's become my new banjo motto.

FortWayne's comment about "too fast" is interesting. I love the recordings of Franklin and the great John Summers playing together. Most other rercordings of Summers fiddling solo, he plays like a demon! It almost sounds like Franklin tamed him so they could play so well in their duets.

Hey, thanks so much for this for many reasons.

I feel foolish and out of touch, but I had assumed for a long time that Franklin George had gone to that meeting in the air.

Are there more recordings besides the Cd/Lp on Kanawa?

Man, can he play it the way I like!

I'm glad everyone enjoyed that. Larry Dent posted that up on youtube.

boyd1, Frank has a great cd with David O'Dell playing banjo with him. I'm not sure where you can get it anymore though. It's called Reflections of the Past.

Reflections of the Past and more are still available Through County Sales.

Hey Chad Thanks for the post. Are you coming down to BUW this year, if so looking forward to seeing you, if not see you at clifftop

whyteman - Posted - 02/13/2010:  10:04:07

Might add that David O'Dell is a wonderful banjo player in his own right. I strongly endorse his solo "Banjo For A Rainy Day" cd and his banjo/fiddle Cd with Dave Bing.
