Australia is a long way from Colorado. But, if I could afford the plane ticket, it would certainly be worth it to me. I would happily travel to anywhere on the globe, to attend a workshop with Cathy Moore. She brings a wealth of knowledge to creative dimensions of clawhammer banjo, and she's one of today's truly great clawhammer banjo teachers. Those who are fortunate enough to attend this, will definitely expand their perspective of the ol' 5-string. Bon voyage, Cathy; drive safe.

Agreed Paul there is very little chance of workshops like this in australia at all, and noone i would rather have one with.. (tho there are many others i would like to)
I feel truely lucky to attend this WS , there will only be... at most 4 of us im guessing. up close and personal.

tanglefingers,
Not only is there is very little chance to have a Cathy Moore workshop in Australia, but anywhere. Her high-powered "day job" permits her only enough time to have preciously few workshops. I may have to launch a fundraising campaign to ship myself out there for the auspicious occasion : ) Cathy brings a really worthwhile original perspective to clawhammer banjo.

[BYW, in regards to your sig line, "We can bomb the world to pieces, but we can't bomb it onto PEACE.
Micheal Franti," - my version would go, "We can bomb the world to pieces, or we can PLUNK it into PEACE." You'll have to get Cathy to tell you about the project she's currently working on; it's fascinating and highly significant.]

Have a great workshop and please tell us all about it.

New Farm Park ..... which city/town/state? Is there more than one New Farm Park in Australia?

If it is New Farm Park in Brisbane I'm not a clawhammer-er but I'd love to come along and listen

I'm checking my frequent flyer points to get to Brissy for the day. It looks like I may be able to make it but I'm a bit worried about putting my banjo in the plane hold, in the rather flimsy case I have, so I'm still tossing up the pros and cons.

If you can get to Brissy airport I could pick you up on the way into town if you want.
I live northside so it's not too far out of my way.

As much as it sounds tempting I don't think I will as I'd be like the little kid who jumps into the deep end of the swimming pool without his floaties on. I'd be in way over my head and it'd make all the big kids have to stop and bail me out so I don't drown instead of having their fun

I'll be there no problems but I've never clawhammered ever before.
(I can go sit in the naughty corner with a dunce cap on if you want)

I have used a clawhammer though and managed to hit my thumb and say a few choice words - does that count?

Any special requests preferences on the food side of things?

Ok - I'm coming. I've cashed in my frequent flyers to fly up to brissie for the day. So I hope it isnt cancelled.

Thanks for the offer of a lift Kip, but I will be arriving very early in the morning (the only available flight). I will probably make my way slowly into town for a lazy breakfast and then onto New Farm where, if its a nice day, I will be found under a tree picking away.

no its still on Ray, but they got back to me last week saying the rotunda is NOT available so look around for a small group of pickers near the rotunda, we may move on from there depending on what is actualy going on. if its raining.... errrm we ... go to the lounge bar of the nearest pub?

I have one of those 3m x 3m gazebo shade thingys that I cart around in the boot of my car and can put it up if we need something to sit under if there's not enough trees.

The pub sounds like a really good option too.

It's great to see the interest here. Thanks to Tim/Tanglefingers for posting this thread and organizing things on the ground, and I'm looking forward to the workshop!

I've been in Australia for about two weeks so far, and with the demands of my business and the spotty internet connection at hotels, I haven't been keeping up much online. I did, however, find a jam on my first day in Australia. They didn't have another banjo, or I would have joined in:

I had another banjo sighting yesterday. At the (extremely warm!) Christmas parade in Adelaide, there was a Dixieland band on a float, with a gentleman strumming away on a 4-string. I'd post a picture but the internet gods are apparently cranky at the moment.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! Way to give a person a panic attack.
I was just planning on sitting back and soaking it in.

Thanks for the offer but please don't pack an extra banjo just for me (if you were bringing it anyway I'm sure someone else will do it more justice than I could)

I've never ever clawhammered before and I don't know if I could handle the pressure of learning the basics in time.

I'm still practicing furiously so I'm not the worst beginner at Banjo Camp (bluegrass) which starts on Thursday 4th Dec.

I suppose I could put my banjo in the car (resonator and all )

just kidding... the more banjos the better i reccon, we all know just how hard they are to get to look at and play in australia , i figure we all bring as many as we can just for the sake of trying each others instruments. also Cathy is without a banjo and other than my Electa i have only real skins so if its a steamy day we could be in trouble but it seems like we will plenty to look at and pick on

hmm no rotunda and long range forcast so far we are expecting chances of high rainfall starting u guesed it... the 28th. unfortunately i am a long way from bris but what i will do is maybe try to find somthing under cover erlier in the day when i arive and perhaps talk to the publican of the nearest place to see if they mind us setting up somewhere on a verandah or somthing. I live local and we've just had a thunderstorm go through this evening.

If it was low rain predicition my guess would be that we'd be OK around lunch time as the storms usually come late afternoon/evening. But with the forcast as high rain it might not be too good.

Unfortunately my place is fairly small and roughly an hours drive away so probably not a viable option even though I'd love to have everyone here.

I'm already starting to make a list of places to call tomorrow .... I'm sure it will qualify as work somehow

Hi Folks,
I just wrote this to Alan, and then decided to post it here:
I'm starting a multi-media banjo blog and I'm interested in getting information on Cathy's gathering with you folks in Australia, after it takes place. With her approval, of course, I'd like to see videos, photos, notes, audio, written reports - anything I might be able to use.
Please spread the word to those who plan to attend. As you can no doubt tell by my BHO posts on Cathy, I consider her to be a very important person in today's clawhammer world. I'd appreciate any help I can get in advancing global awareness about her. Of course, whatever I come up with will promote your efforts in advancing the banjo scene in Australia, as well. I hope it's a great gathering. It's been nice to see the enthusiasm about it that you guys are generating on BHO. Good luck. Wish I could be there (maybe some day).

Wendy Holman... Just messaged me, she is bringing 4 or 5 of her students (none of whom use hang out it would seem?!) so thats making nearer 10 of us now.

Alan... tells me Cathy is all good with the video camera, so there will be some record at least Paul and you and the world are welcome to copys of whatever we produce. ill try to scratch up another one as well

Kip... any word on the rain venue front?

tanglefingers - Posted - 11/22/2009:  07:31:02

latest weather forcast ... FINE
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/long-...qld/brisbane
http://www.totaltravel.com.au/trave...city/weather

KIP has offered her services as caterer from the begining but there seem to be rather a few of us gathering now. Perhaps if we each bring a plate or some kind of picnik nibblys would help share the burden. I think i will make us a tray of baklava (that never fails)
she also has done a recon of the park and has spotted some smaller shelters, so if its raining we can try them. however it seems we wont have to wory about that and out main concern hopefully will be hats and sunscreen.

I think ill probably be there any time after 11am, Im going to settle in and start warming up, and i invite anyone else who cares to turn up erlier to do so , im sure we all have somthing to share, a meeting like this is a rare chance to pick up ideas and tunes from each other as well.
I also look forward to meeting Alans "mystery guest' a melodic "ken perlman" style picker freind from the US.
I will make up a sign and hang it up somwhere nearby so we stick out a bit.

this is lookin like it will be a realy great day,

....well my plane gets in at 7.00 am Brisbane time, so I will be casually making my way to Brunswick St looking for an early breakfast and a flat white. After that I will be hanging round the park whipping out my banjo at the slightest encouragement. I should be pretty easy to spot (cant imagine there are many clawhammer players in the park on a Saturday morning.) Must remember to pack my picnic blanket.

Ray

Koala_in_pjs - Posted - 11/23/2009:  02:16:51

I am hoping to be there a bit after 12ish.

The shelters have a picnic table under them and a bit of seating in one of the corners so if it does rain we might all fit under it but may be a bit cozy. I'm sure we'll be fine as long as everyone points their banjo in the same direction or there could be a few of these

I've loaded a mudmap and a streetview into my photos to give folks a bit of an idea of where we might gather (as a starting point anyway) as New Farm Park is pretty big.

I'm sure you could always follow your ears to the sound source but it would probably be easier to park close to where we might end up instead of parking on the other side of the park.

LOL I've never used the word park so many times in one posting.

See you all Saturday

Kip

Cathy
I think I have to make an apology to you. When I heard you were coming to Oz in Nov, Fred Pribac mentioned some time ago he was hoping you could get to Tasmania. I didn't look at your blog and have now noticed you mentioned Adelaide or Tas. I see above that you were here in Adelaide on the 14th watching the Xmas pageant - a very hot weekend. We held our Old Timey Jam with around a dozen pickers and fiddlers at my home (about 1/2 are clawhammer players) in the northern suberbs on the day after ie the 15th!! Darn - our loss if you could have made it and my fault for not realising you were here.
We enjoy your playing and teaching approach and it would've been a great opportunity. Never mind. - maybe next time. Hope the Brisbane shop goes really wel.

Well I hope we are all set for tomorrow. A late thunderstorm forecast so lets hope its late enough to not matter. I have sent through my cell number to Cathy, but I will have access to email, so any last minute changes can be emailed through as well.

Looking forward to this, particularly to finally meeting Alan, Tim and everybody else.

Thanks, everyone, for your enthusiasm, and please accept my apologies for being offline a bit. I've just finished two days of conferences and am resting up in preparation for tomorrow. I'll see you all at the park!

The current weather forecast is for a shower or thunderstorm late afternoon or evening.

Usually this means it may start to get rainy sometime around 5:00 - 6:00 or later so I would think we'll have had our fun before it gets wet. As long as mother nature doesn't change her mind and bring it on early.

Big thanks to Tim tanglefingers for doing most of the organising and thanks to Tracy (kip) for the food, and for dropping me off at the airport.

Hope to see the videos soon.

Was a great day for banjos in southern Qld , aside form the great workshop , the meet and greet aspect was fantastic. I wish there was more time to talk to all of you. Strangely out of all the attendants only 3 Aussies? All the others were either expat Poms or from the US? I found this a very revealing cross section of the banjo community and surprised and slightly saddened me. It was interesting that with all the tunes we all knew we could only agree on ... cripple creek to jam on , plenty of tune knowledge amongst us , but nothing in common i think this is indicative of the fact that there is no jams anywhere you can go to do the "local tunes". An exiting array of instruments for the banjo starved were trotted out and handed around for all and sundry to try. That alone would have been worth the drive. Pancho arrived with his cameras and filmed the whole event, I have the 2 mini DV tapes, of the frontal still cam, but his digital high def camera stuff will have to wait for his busy schedual before i will get an edited version of highlights.
Thanks again to kip for catering and bringing her banjo along anyway in spite of herself. Thanks to Alan for the CDs, Thanks to all those who traveled long distances. Thanks lastly , to Cathy for the whole thing, and on top of that refusing to let us pass the hat round at the end.

A REPEAT PERFORMANCE NEXT YEAR??? I mentioned a repeat meeting around this time next year, there was a fair bit of interest in this idea at the time. Now everyone has slept on it i will propose this again in a fresh thread. Id love all those who came to come again and bring friends and family to a whole day night event with camping at a winery venue in Stanthorpe.
There is nothing like this within 6 hours of here,at least. what do you say ppl...???
